KNEE DEEP

CHAPTER - ONE

Lagos traffic will make you think of the words "Hell on Earth". If you're a lagosian or have ever visited Lagos you'll have an idea of what I'm talking about. My name is Dave and this is my story.
I work as an accountant at a Property Insurance company known as SaICO(SEKURIT all INSURANCE COMPANY). It's basically the usual boring job, you resume in the morning Stare at files and close at the end of the day only to resume tomorrow again. So the only time I had to myself was weekends and laundry + cleaning takes up the weekend.

You can only imagine how much i dread Mondays and it's never relentless traffic (Lagos na for strong man, na who get power dey survive). I was still in the public bus popularly known as DANFO scrolling thru my Facebook notifications and waiting for other passengers to board when one of the best fragrance I've ever smelled hit me.

The face I saw was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen(ahh God really dey create) the first thought that crossed my mind was "na person born this fine girl?"
"Excuse me can u please adjust, I'd like to sit here" she said. Believe me I had been to Tokyo and back, because it was the silent cough from the man sitting beside that brought me back to reality.
"I'm sorry, what did you say" I asked still staring
" I said adjust a bit please, I'd like to sit here" she repeated
" Oh, small thing. Anything for you" I replied trying to create a good atmosphere for possible conversation.
Omo Naso this babe bone me oo, she didn't even reply me and sat down, the man beside me made matters worse with his comment
"Early Momo Monday morning, na woman some people dey toast" and everyone in the bus burst out laughing.
Brethrens I almost cried but I quickly composed myself, brought out my headphones and started playing music just to feel less embarrassed( thank God at least it wasn't a full bus yet).

I continued listening to music till I got to the busstop I was to alight and got down from the bus, there was an awkward moment when I felt she wanted to say something but then the bus began to move and the moment passed, it was probably my imagination.
I got to the office and got busy almost immediately, totally forgetting about that morning incident. 12pm and I was still working when there was a little tap on my desk, I didn't need to look up to know who it was.
"Hi Dave, haven't seen you all day. Are you trying to be invisible" asked Amanda
"haha very funny" I replied
Amanda is my coworker at SEKURIT, she's about two years older than I am and we've been best of friends. She's nice and fun to be around, even though I know she's into me I've only just seen her as a friend because I was in a relationship before. A month ago I broke up with my girlfriend and ever since then Amanda has been extra nice, always looking out for my well-being. In all Amanda is genuinely concerned about me, and it's not like I have any complaints with the attention I was getting.

"You this workaholic, let's go get something to eat" she said stroking my hair playfully
"ummm, is it time already" I replied scratching my head
" I've told you to always be time conscious, anyways it's my treat but you're paying"
"How then is that ur treat, if I still have to pay again. You this girl en" I gave her a look.
It was time for our lunch break, so we were about to go to the companys cafeteria to get something to eat that was when I realized my wallet was missing.
"what's the problem Dave?"
" Amanda I think I must've misplaced my wallet "
" Oh, that's a good one" she burst out laughing "All this drama just because I asked you to pay"
"No Amanda, I'm serious. It's supposed to be in my pocket, I'm not sure how I didn't notice all day"
"Alright calm down, I think you must've dropped it somewhere. When was the last time you saw it?"
" The last time I saw it was ............." and I stopped mid sentence, with a flashback to that morning encounter. The last time I'd seen it was after I paid for my fare, and the only person beside me was the lady and the man. I'd felt a light touch beside my pocket but I didn't think much of it, cos I was in a bad mood after the embarrassing moment. The awkwardness when I alighted was as a result of her stealing my phone and hoping I wouldn't notice.

" Looks like it was the public bus I took down to work this morning, someone must've stolen it then"
"You see what I've been telling you, I can always pick you up on my way here" she said
"Thanks dear, you've been a blessing already. Don't stress, I can manage" I said smiling
" I've told you it's no bother, continue being stubborn. Anyways let's go eat, looks like it's still my treat after all" she replied while dragging me off my sit.
We walked hand in hand down to the cafeteria, with me still puzzled how a beautiful and mesmerizing young lady like that could be a thief.
