The Day Before It Began | Bayonne - St Jean Pied de Port

in #camino6 years ago

So I want to start this story by telling you I forgot something so important! I will tell you what it is in a minute, but first, our morning.

So we rose in Bayonne at our lovely Airbnb with Eve and Tomas (our hosts). They let us know about the local market with all local produce so we went there to get some fruit for breakfast. It was lovely.

We decided we wanted to catch the midday train to St Jean so we only had time for a quick walk through the city. That led us to the Cathedral...

After a brief look around we had to get over to the train. We met a man on the way who said I looked like a real professional with my camera gear! He gave us some tips for the Camino as well. We said 'Au revoir' and ran to the train! We were stoked to discover our train tickets were discounted by 20% for buying them as a couple too!

On the train it was packed with Camino goers. People with hiking bags, walking poles, cycles and everything else in between. The atmosphere was buzzing and we were all getting very excited. Once we arrived in St Jean Pied de Port we decided to head straight for the Pilgrim's Office to get our Camino 'Passports'.

This was very exciting and we got the full run down of the first day, what to expect and where amenities were, etc. It sounded quite intimidating. And then the kind lady gave us a piece of paper with the side profile of each days walk. The first day looks like we are actually hiking a mountain. I don't know how we are going to do it. But we must make it to Roncevaux!

After this we were walking through town and @chazzie-leigh was complaining about her back hurting. So we stopped at a hiking shop were a kind Canadian woman showed us some backpacks. She gave us such an epic talk about bags including demonstrations that we actually could not possibly leave without buying the bag! This is when I realised what I had forgotten... MY CREDIT CARD

I'm going to say it now, if there are any steemians out there who want to sponsor us on this trip, feel absolutely free! Leave a comment below and I will tell everyone how much of a kind soul you are! Either that or make me #steemitfamous so every post I create gets some amazing coverage and upvotes!

We are going to struggle. If you have been following our journey on @dtube you will have known that we have lost a lot of money recently on this dud van purchase. We actually were planning to use this Camino as an escape from this huge disappointment and go into debt a little bit before having to work again. Well, I'm not sure what we will do now...

Disregarding this setback, we checked into our Auberge where the host gave us the most epic spiel about the Camino. I truly got goosebumps listening to him. He told us a few rules, he gave us tips about listening to our body, he even told us how to walk together. I highly recommend coming to St Jean Pied de Port and staying in this auberge just to hear this man's piece.

Anyway, we are going to walk into tomorrow with our heads held high, our bags on our backs and our steem accounts absolutely loaded! Haha no, more like with our humble beginnings on this Camino.
