Cambodia Chronicles - Cambodia's Main Opposition Party Dissolved By Supreme Court - A 1 Party Democracy

in #cambodia7 years ago (edited)

The highest court in Cambodia dissolved the main political opposition party last Thursday. Does this represent a move from a "democracy" to a "dictatorship" or is this some kind of third way... A single party democracy? 😉

Being openly critical of the Cambodian government can be dangerous and it is not my intention in this post to be negative. This information is completely in the public domain I just choose to bring it to the attention of my Steemit family.

I am intrigued with this developing situation but there is minimal acceptance of dissent. This was exemplified recently with the closure of the Cambodia Daily newspaper which had been operating here for 24 years.

The truth about this newspaper is that like many newspapers it was a front for the Council Of Foreign Relations - the publisher was part of the CFR!

Cambodian Political History

The Cambodian history is tragic and deserves a post entirely for itself. The sad and tragic part of the worst of the history is the subversive part that other foreign countries played in the tragedy - not least the US. However the political situation in Cambodia has been very interesting since the tragedies of the Khmer Rouge.

Cambodia's current Prime Minister Hun Sen has been in power for the last 30 years and now in a politically unopposed climate he looks set to extend his tenure in next years election.

The International Reaction

The dissolution of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) was initiated after accusations of plotting to take power with the help of the United States. The leader of the of party leader Kem Sokha was arrested.

What is most interesting here is that even with the international condemnation few countries are willing to enact sanctions against Cambodia. This is a testament to Cambodia's extensive ties to China and the numerous international garment corporations which profit of Cambodia's extremely cheap labour.

It is going to be interesting watching how this situation unfolds... even if it is from afar!

I always wonder, why some countries suffer this kind of government, maybe people tend to give up their rights more easily

Good question! There is some interesting and very tragic history here in Cambodia that have impacted the situation but in most countries it is just pure corruption and gangsterism! UPvoted!

I am so sorry
