My first San Pedro (Trichocereus Pachanoi) culture

in #cactus7 years ago (edited)

Heyho everyone!

Some month ago I started my first San Pedro cultivation from seed. It's a very interesting plant which can get very huge.
I don't have a "green thumb" but wanted to start growing something. Cannabis is illegal in my country and cacti were the only plants I had as a child wich didn't die :) So I thought: why not? Lets try it! I hope some of my seedlings will reach such a size some day :

The good thing is: It's not very expensive!
I bought 50 seeds, a soil mix, bird sand, a mini greenhouse and horsetail extract for around 30 euros @ https://kakteenshop.lophophora-williamsii.de a german shop which is specialised on San Pedro and Peyote. They even have a very detailed (german) instruction.

I didn't buy any special lights for my first cultivation. I chose a bright place on my window board with a lot of sun. I hope that our german summer will provide enough light :)

Preparation

Date: End of march 2017

I filled the bowl of the mini-greenhouse up to 2/3 with the pre-mixed soil. The soil contains the following ingredients (hope I translated them right):

  • pumice
  • silt
  • coir substrate
  • perlite
  • expanded clay

Then I misted it evenly with a spray flask of water and spread my 50 seeds on the surface. I pressed them on very gently. Now I had to strew the bird sand over the soil. It's important to only scatter a fine layer of sand over the seeds because they still need to "see the light" :)
I shut the greenhouse (but let the vent slots 1/2 opened) and placed it on the window board:

After some hours the greenhouse got steamy like expected.

Watering

It's important that the seeds don't get too much water otherwise they could start going mouldy. A good ventilation is important as well. If you don't have such a greenhouse you could put holes in the cap of a plastic box or use cling wrap with holes.

When the fog on the cover is getting less and the soil is dry I water the hole surface with my spray flask and preferably chalk free water mixed with 20ml of horsetail extract. The horsetail extract should reduce the danger of mould formation. Normally I water them every 2-3 days.

After 2 weeks

After 1 week the first small catci appeared! Some followed in the second week. After 14 days I had ~13 small cacti. It will take a while until they get bigger. Strangely only seeds in the first half of the bowl sprout. My theorey is that the second half was to sunny for the sensitive seeds. It's possible as well that the mist on the windows worked as magnifier and burn the seeds.

After 1 1/2 month

Date: 15th of May 2017

I would have liked it if more then 13 cacti appeared. But maybe the place isn't perfect and I need to get more experience with this gardening stuff ;-) But if I will get around 10 big cacti one time, that would be very nice! After 1 1/2 month the small green dots get a bit bigger:

In the last time there didn't happen much. They stayed the same size for some weeks now but I think they will need more time.

The next steps

At the moment we have fairly nice weather in germany. I'm going to place them on the balcony for some days so they can "sniff" some fresh air.
After 2-3 month I will remove the cover and place them outside when the weather is good. I plan to water them everytime the soil is completely dry.

Any clues?

I am very exited how big my cacti will get. Do you have any clues or improvement suggestions for this or my next cultivation?

I'm going to post again if something interesting happens or when I put the cacti in their own pots.

Wooooo! So cool ! I have one in my garden in Brasil . Now I want to plant more!! Tanks for your post ;)

Nice! For sure the sun in Brasil is better for San Pedro. I bet it's a very happy cactus :)

I would suggest to get fertilizing them to get them growing. No nutrients will be extremely slow otherwise.

Thanks for your help! I read that it's not a good idea to fertilize them too early. I will do some more research.
