How-to: Link your Byteball and Bitcoin address to the Byteball database for the monthly airdrop

in #byteball7 years ago

Hi guys, this is going to be a simple article describing the cost-free way to link up with the Byteball database in order to receive free bytes.

Now, the terms of the drop change month-to-month (i.e. May's drop included 10% free bytes to holders, and June's drop included 20% free bytes to holders), but this does not mean you need to re-link to the Byteball database. Once you link, you are linked, and that won't change.

If you don't already have the Byteball wallet, download it on Android from here. iPhone users will have to build Byteball from scratch if they own a Mac. Windows/Linux/Mac users can visit the Byteball Github page for release downloads.

A couple things to note before we start:

  • This assumes you've already set up your Byteball wallet and are ready to receive funds.
  • This procedure requires a Bitcoin wallet on where you can sign messages. The Coinomi Android wallet can do this, as well as Coinbase online wallet
    • To use the Coinbase sign message feature, go to https://www.coinbase.com/addresses/ and choose the address you want to use, then click "Details" and you'll see the link to sign a message

I personally recommend the Bitcoin full node for this procedure as this is the simplest way to proceed, but you have choices. Moving on!

  1. Load the Byteball wallet and initiate a chat with the Transition Bot in the Bot Store
  2. Once you start chatting, the Bot will give you some instructions. Here are those broken down:
    1. Send the Bot your Byteball address. This is the address that will receive free bytes
    2. Send the Bot your Bitcoin address. This is the one you will be linking in the Byteball database, and also the one you will be using the sign a message in the next step
    3. Copy your Byteball address into your Bitcoin application as the message to sign, and then use the Bitcoin address you sent the Bot in the last step to actually create a signed message.
    4. Send the Bot your signed message; your Bitcoin and Byteball address should now be linked in the Byteball database.
    5. Move all of your Bitcoin to the linked Bitcoin address, and move any bytes you currently own to the linked Byteball address. This ensures you receive the maximum number of bytes for your participation in the drop.

That's it! Now bear in mind, the term "Byteball database" in this context does NOT correlate to the Byteball DAG/"blockchain"; this is a database that is maintained by the Byteball creator, Anton Churyumov, and is used to determine which Bitcoin holders are taking part in the Byteball "Fair Initial Distribution" of bytes into circulation.

The next drop of this Fair Initial Distribution is set for the full moon of July, which is July 9th. For more details on this drop, visit the Byteball home page

Thanks for reading :)
