B&W Photo Contest - Waterscape - Entry #1

This is an African Elephant enjoying the cooling water in Sabi, Elephant Plains reserve in South Africa.
The picture was taken on a Canon EOS 650D in colour, the B&W affect was applied using GIMP photo editing software.

The mighty elephant. It seems to be at a standstill like about to catch something while the other elephant looks in anticipation :)

There was a whole herd here, from matriarchs to small baby elephants all enjoying the water on a very hot day.
There were some young males trying to get the attention of some females, and the matriarch was very protective not allowing some of the males to leave the water. The sounds they made were incredible - some so low frequency they made the ground vibrate! I took around 800 photos in that one sitting, so plenty more to come!
Ha! That's a lot of photos. That sound is interesting. I have never been around elephants that much. I believe the longest was during my visit in one zoo but it only took me a few seconds because the I can't bear the smell. It would be awesome though to see them in their natural habitat.
