Broken and Worn: The Half-Century Old Water Pump

This water pump was built in 1969 located at the back of the house owned by a Filipino-American Navy officer and his Filipina wife. It had been the primary source of water supplying 20 households during that time.

After the World War II, the officer settled in the Philippines with his family. Observing that the neighbors were fetching their water in the river around 1.5km away from their place, he decided to build this water pump in order for the entire neighborhood to benefit from.

Years had passed and the lives of the neighborhood scaled up. In early 2000, almost 80% of the households in their compound already have their own electricity-powered water source, hence, putting the half-century old pump into long rest. However, during power outtage especially after typhoons, the people are reviving the said pump as their water source.

The good thing about this pump is that it does not need any electricity to run. It only needs water to be poured on the hole on top and continuous pumping. In about 3-4minutes, one will have an overflowing water running out.

This is my entry of #bwphotocontest by @daveks with the theme “broken and worn.”

I just remember during those times na wala pang NAWASA or metered water in our province, we used to fetch water in one of our neighbor's water pump or we call it "bomba". =)

Yeah. :) In Pangasinan, we usually call it “tuato.” Parents usually say, “Laka, man-tuato ka.” (“Go, get some water from the pump.”)

When we were still kids, we also cover its mouth and then allow the water to come out from its small holes and we shout, “Showeeeer!” :D

Childhood became fancy because of this water pump. :D

We call it bomba in Davao too! We have one at pag walang tubig, sa amin naliligo ang nga kapitbahay namin. 😁

I always associate this with my childhood. Our house in Davao has one and the idea came from my grandparents who also have their own. This is something that my kids are always excited to try when we visit our grandparents' house. Somehow, they find it amazing. 😁

Exactly @dandalion! Kids always love to play with the “tubo” no matter how hard it is to pull sometimes. :D
I remember one time when I was a kid, my jaw was injured because the tubo accidentally slipped off my hand. It hit my face. My grandma was so upset then. Good it wasn’t so bad that they only place ice packs on my face.haha
