B&W Photo Contest - Travel - Warriors and Horses, Xian, China
This is my second entry for this theme. One of the many pits at the main pavilion in Xian, China, displaying the Terracotta Warriors. The pits were covered with timbers and earth, and over the years decay and erosion caused much of this to collapse, damaging many of the statues. The statues in this photo have been restored but in many cases some pieces, like the heads, were separated from the body and are too damaged to restore.
Most of the statues are warriors organized in military formations to protect the Emperor, with a headquarters, large bodies of infantry, and even cavalry, hence the horses in this photo. If you look closely you will see that the facial expressions are all different, and it is thought that the sculptors used friends, family and colleagues as inspiration for their work, so the Terracotta Warriors are a memorial not just to the Emperor who conceived it and had it built, but also to ordinary people.
