I am looking forward to seeing your butterflies and other insects!

Here are my photos for today of the Question Mark Butterfly

This butterfly may be asking you a question or may have a question itself. That is because it has a question mark on the hindwing which is only visible when the wings are closed, hence its name.

These butterflies are very pushy and chase away other butterflies and insects. It tried in vein to chase away this bee and Ailanthus Webworm moth but they didn't budge.

Both males and females prefer to feed on tree sap, rotting fruit and dung but will sip on nectar from flowers when all else fails.

Female Question Mark butterflies do not make it easy for their caterpillars. They will lay their eggs under leaves not on the host plant, but near it. Each caterpillar is then left to go out on its own to find the host plant so it can eat. Host plants include elm trees, hackberry trees and shrubs, and nettles.

When their wings are open you wouldn't know it was the same butterfly. And you know how happy I am when I can capture my subject's face. Yay!

To give you and idea of the size of the Question Mark butterfly, the wingspan is approximately 2 1/4" - 3".

Thanks for flying by!

This beautiful butterfly gif is brought to you by @brisby. Thank you!

All photos are my own.

They do look like colorful beads. I don't see many at all and I am always excited to see them when I do. It sure doesn't look like a moth.

Thanks for your entry @sketch.and.jam! : )
