New Fun Contest : Butterfly Art - Psyche
Huh.....
Just stumbled upon an art contest. This time it's by @deemarshall and the theme of the art is about butterflies....
Yeah, it's been a while since I drew any butterflies. For those who are interested in the contest, here's the link.
Anyways, here's my art. And based on my title, some or you might already guess who this is...
She's Psyche, best known to be a lover for Eros, the god of love in Greek mythology. Her name means 'soul' and she sometimes has butterfly wings in various description after she drank the Ambrosia, the nectar of immortality. As you might guess, her name is the basis of the word "psychology" and the term psyche has a lot in common with the study of psychology and philosophy. Speaking of psychology, the term 'butterfly effect' is also prevalent in this field of study where one small action has a significant impact on events.
Anyways, the sketch.
As much as I want the clothing being ancient, it ended up being modern LOL.
The Inking.
At least the butterfly wings look neat after the inking.
Base colors.
Basically, I used some purple and blue with orange and brown as the contrast.
Details.
Those wing are tougher than I thought.
Background. Basically I just painted the background to be the sky, since she now lives with the gods.
Some final adjustments and compositions.
Anyways....
The story of Eros and Psyche is an interesting one. It really is a package of some stellar ancient drama piece. The story is Psyche is so beautiful that she started to get worshipped more than Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and the most beautiful of the gods at the cost of of not finding any love (cuz she's too beautiful and all.) So Aphrodite orders her son Eros to make her to be loved by a hideous monster, only for Eros to be dazzled by Psyche's beauty and ends up falling in love with her. Unfortunately this does not go well for the two as Aphrodite gives Psyche impossible task if she wants to be together with Eros again. That for me is a breath of fresh air, since we have a female protagonist instead of a long list of male Greek heroes doing the impossible tasks (Hercules or Heracles with his 12 labours anyone?).
Of course the written literature comes from the Romans. So some of you guys might be familiar with Eros being Cupid (yes, THAT Cupid which is always around during Valentines Day) and Aphrodite being Venus instead.
Anyways, enjoy!
Come to think of it, this atr somehow reminds me of that 90's song...
