I'm Not Going To Work On a Post For Hours.. (Ever)
Two or three times this week in various ways the conversation about Quality Content came up.
Just today someone asked me what I vote on and why, so here it is.
My voting level is determined by time, current voting power and what I want to reward.
From day three I've thought that Quality Content is not what we should push, and I still haven't changed my mind. Most have stopped pushing it, but it sometimes takes a bad idea some time to die.
If you are a great writer or love to write, please feel free to publish some Shakespeare like work and hopefully, people will see it and accept it for the greatness that it is.
Personally, I am not a great writer... I don't think social media has anything to do with being a good writer.
For some reason, I have never understood why some thought a good business model would be to find the absolute best work out there and vote it up.
Quality Content is as many say often... is Subjective, but additionally, there is no reason to believe that there is a Demand for it and a lack of Supply. If I want a quality article on the finer points of "Under Water Basket Weaving", I can google it.

While I do like a clean readable post and struggle with broken English... If I can understand what the author is saying and I find it interesting I will likely upvote it.
I came here and continue to come here to learn about crypto, to meet some people who are out of my normal circle and hopefully to earn a bit of Steem.
I do not ever look for or try to vote on the BEST DARN ARTICLE of the day. I vote for people who say interesting things. If they post often and decided a short post or something they wanted to share today was what they posted... I will likely upvote it.
Even though some say we shouldn't talk about Steem, I love to talk about Steem and I like to hear other people's thoughts and ideas on Steem, so I reject that advice as well. I vote for Steem Articles pretty often.
Just giving upvotes takes a certain amount of budgeting and consideration as we don't have an endless supply of votes and hence can only support a limited number of posts. In addition, I like to manually curate, because I think eyes on the site are important.
I like to upvote success posts. To the effect of.. "Hey I Powered Up"... Well because I think we should celebrate success.
I no longer go through NEW. It's too messy. So, I have to learn to know your name or see a really interesting title or picture before to see it before I can vote at all.
So, that is what I vote for, no I don't have a well thought out plan for voting, I just vote as I go around reading things on Steem.
I upvote people I met or want to meet IRL. Cool people. They can post awesome content or shit post. I still want to drink a beer with them, and my upvote might once become of a certain value that buys beers (and plane tickets).

In fact I like to upvote shitposts often too. Things that make me laugh...if more people weren’t afraid of spoiling their image...this place would have been way better imo
The problem with that is, in my opinion and from what I have observed, who gets to post shit post or continually short worthless stuff like Whatsup does is determined by those who hold the most power. They are obviously somehow all linked together somehow or they've determined they just happen to like you. As a matter of fact, to be honest about it, that's why I don't pay much heed to stuff Whatsup post, though I started following he/she/whoever/whatever was because the post were light and airy but after seeing so many others get flagged for such stuff it's just really hard to watch how a selected few get away with it while others suffer for it.
I don't think people get flagged for the style of posts that I make, at least not often.
People get flagged for things with one picture and no context. :)
My feelings are not hurt by your critical feedback. I don't want to be serious on social media and my goal since the beginning has been to help others feel comfortable just posting.
If you follow me you know, it certainly wasn't an easy sell. :)

Quality content is subjective. Quality does not have to equate with meeting a standard (of appearance, erudition, scholarship etc etc). Unless perhaps 'Quality' be defined objectively - however, this looks suspiciously like a process of defining something that may relate to an individual's, or a group's, subjective preferences.
Robert Pirsig went nuts trying to understand, dissect and explain 'Quality' in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance lol.
Quality being subjective, I can only speak for my take on my stuff:
With regard to perceived quality in the posts of others on the blockchain, again, subjective and without formula. The wonderful thing about blockchain multimedia blogging is the range and variety of creative potential we have at our disposal - this may take any form, short or long.
To have earnings/growth etc at the forefront of my mind would dilute creativity - I am aware of these factors and I welcome them, but they do not drive my blockchain car. Since experiencing the above 'reversal' of priorities, I have been enjoying blockchain life a lot more :)
People state and say many many things about this and that, much of it expressed as dissatisfaction. I think that if I can accept my own shit (tokens and all lol), then I am closer to not being knocked off balance by anyone else's 'shit' (pretty or ugly). Conversely, if I have some level of dissatisfaction with my own stuff (life, blog, growth blah blah), I am likely to project this outwards and find some blockchain bones to pick apart for this mysterious substance called 'Quality'.

Don't sell yourself short. You have a voice and you get the point across. That's like 80% of being a great writer lol.
I like to up vote things that took work but that isn't all I upvote and it shouldn't be. Ideally, I'd like to see both social posts and more formal works have the ability to earn here. The important thing, though, is not making people feel like they have to post in one way or the other because that will drive potental users away from a site that really needs them in order to thrive.
I am a decent communicator, but if you get down to the "art" of writing that has never been an interest of mine.
I admire it though.
I totally agree that we have to allow people to just be themselves. We don't have to reward it, but we shouldn't shame or intimidate them.
Truth. This place should be fun and shame isn't fun for anyone...unless the person is into that sort of thing lol.

I do love the art of writing! I like to do art sometimes but most of the time I just want to say things. So I say things. I would like to write more artistic texts, though, but effort requires time and I don't have time.
Exactly this.
I upvote a lot of shitposts just because I want to support the people who are fun. I also don't spend a long time on each post because I have a short attention span, so I tend to upvote poems, memes, jokes, pictures and articles that are really really easy to read (I upvoted a 4000-word article yesterday but it was very easy to read).

The reason I follow you is that you can get such a great conversion started! I don't know whether you're a great writer or not, but you're a great starter of discussion and that's easily valuable.
I can't say I agree with everything you say (I don't even upvote everything you post), but I'm with you on a lot of things. I like to read and talk about Steem, but not all the time. So in the aftermath of HF20 I started to get a bit fed up of all the Steem posts, because there wasn't much else to read and I wanted some variety. I like quality content, if its information I'm looking for or interested in. Unfortunately, we don't have enough writers on Steem for me to find everything I might want, so searching on the site will likely not bring up specific things. Therefore, I have to agree that a Google search does the trick better. Maybe we'll start to get some articles from Steem appearing in those searches.
I agree that this is a social site, so it's fun to share in people's experiences and fun crap they post about. I enjoy the conversations they raise and I like to be entertained or given a laugh.

Some of the most valuable and interesting conversations I have are with people who disagree. If I just wanted agreement, no reason to post.
I like to discuss things. I often write about things I am still sorting out and I like to hear other opinions.

As long as it doesn't just turn into a slanging match, they are the best conversations. Variety is the spice of life, after all. You get to see new perspectives and quite often learn new things.
I've always been this way things when social media was a new thing and even when I was a livejournal fanatic. Post and support things I am interested in. A few people outside my usual scope, and tons of new online friends...

Most people do this, just vote within their circles I think that's OK, that's the point of social networks. Lots of discussion and the positive reinforcement keeps the community going.

I rather have comments than votes all day. A post with 5 legit comments vs 5 sbd in upvotes. I go with those 5 comments.

There's pretty much NO market for "great writing." I learned that back in creative writing courses in college, in the early 1980's... for one class, we had a field trip to a bookstore where the "assignment" was to find high quality writing, and compare how much "high quality" ("Literature") writing we found, as a ratio of all books in the store. About 2%. And that was generous, because it was a college bookstore with educational texts.
I'm a proponent of adding value. Which is a pretty broad concept... a picture of a beach with no context adds ZERO value for me, a picture of the same beach with "This was my favorite beach during our 2013 trip to Greece" as the caption probably does.
I like the way you say that. I've been saying engagement. But I think adds value is even better. :)

I like "engagement," too... as long as engagement is also about the content being interesting enough that I want to engage with it.
My big no-no's are zero originality, zero effort posts. If the OP can't be bothered, why should I be bothered... the whole expectation of "something for nothing" bugs me.
We really don't have the privilege to really distinguish any type of content as this is a decentralized medium meant to really engage and community seems fit to do so. There will always be consequences, but to stop and/or limit content creation is shooting ourselves in the foot to creating value and fostering community.
Totally agree. Why intimidate users, especially when most of the time the complaints are about jealousy, unfairness or ego.
Crypto will not solve any of those issues.
I don't think it's exactly wrong...but it's not the full picture. We should upvote content we want to see more of. We should support people making awesome drawings and stories and putting it out there. I'm not so sure about wiki-bullshit though. But, there's more than just that that we should support. We should support people that have stuck around and made friends and continue to share their thoughts and a bit of their life as well. It's not always about "quality content", but it is sometimes. Our obsession over quality content kinda shot us in the foot. We had people looking so hard for good posts at the same time as utter shit was being pushed up to trending and it drove a lot of us mad.
Yeah, I tend to vote for people who have stuck around also.
