What is Dravida Nadu anyway?
Dravida Nadu is the name of a hypothetical "sovereign state" demanded by various entities in South Asia (South India). Although the movement first began in Tamil Nadu, it expanded to include other Indian states, such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Karnataka.
Why do the caste defenders hate the movement?
The movement had its root in campaigns against politics of upper caste hegemony.
When did the movement reach its height?
The movement reached its height from the 1940s to 1960s.
Why did the movement fail?
The movement failed because of the following major reasons:
(A) The central government had the means to kill the movement;
(B) The fears of Tamil hegemony in the mind of other participants;
(C) The creation of linguistic states through the States Reorganisation Act 1956 (this weakened the movement further).
(D) In 1963, the Government of India (GoI) declared secessionism as an illegal act.
The surge in upper caste chauvinism – on top of a shopping list of dissatisfactions, notably the Centre`s economic neglect of Southern states – has, in recent years, rekindled the desire for a sense of something similar to the concept of Dravida Nadu; this is a politically sensitive time for the Indian leadership given the fact that Kashmir and Northeast, if joined by the south, could go out of control once and for all.

It's true that governments across the globe don't want secessionism. Which is understandable.
On the question of legality, it depends (some, especially in northeast India, who had been coerced to join the Indian Union at gunpoint, insist that there's no question of divorce when there's no marriage in the first place). Besides, there's an example of the Scottish independence referendum, in 2014, which is a lawful process that gave the people whether they want separation from UK or not.
Whatever may be the case, as an individual, I can only hope and pray that fairness/justice prevails over all else.
