If you’ve driven past McDonald’s, you’ve surely seen the words “more than 99 billion served.” If you think about all the packaging that it took to serve those 99 billion + people that’s a massive impact on the environment, especially when many of those are happy meals with plastic toys.

Now the company is addressing the ways its harming the planet, by going green. By 2025 the restaurant aims to source all of its packaging from “renewable, recycled or certified sources, with a preference for Forest Stewardship Council certification for fiber.” Additionally, they'll begin recycling at all of its 37,000 locations. They’ve also committed to stop using foam packaging altogether.

In 2015, McDonald’s was the first company of its kind to eliminate using certain antibiotics from their chicken supply chain, which prompted rivals to follow suit.

“These goals have the potential to be transformational because no other restaurant has the scope and global supply chain of McDonald‘s,” said Tom Murray, from the Environmental Defense Fund.
