I don't know about you, but when I think about how similar these ideologies are it makes think they might as well be the same thing! Lets take a look at anarchist / communist leaders who totally rejected hierarchy and were part of a stateless society.
Man I can almost smell that rustic open air of a society with no leaders. Good old Stalin. Leader of the leaderless stateless soviet Russia. Everyone was truly equal and everyone simply cooperated as they saw fit. Mother Russia should be proud.
Mother Russia was once such an amazing example of a stateless leaderless society. Its amazing how the correlation of anarchy and communism is so astutely intertwined so brilliantly. Its almost like there is no need to even have different words! We might as well call it communarchy!
However there are much more recent examples of these amazingly stateless societies. Like North Korea!

I agree that bad anarchy can be a kind of mob ruling democracy which may have been part of the downfall to the Roman Empire centuries ago for example. In other words, like you said, power vacuums have been used historically to replace one form of big government with another big form of government, meaning that anarchy has been used by tyrannical authoritarianism, historically speaking, we can see these patterns again and again and again and again and again as we study world history, psychology, anthropology, etc.
