This is great news, but what happened on the 8th/9th to cause such a spike, and the consistent increase thereafter? Did Steemit change something in their back-end to let through more new accounts?

It does not show it on this chart but in watching the posts over time, it was typical for a spike to occur every 10-14 days and then to steadily drop off.
I do not know why the drop leveled off and maintained it for the last couple weeks. Perhaps they have someone who tends to the approval process each day for a couple hours.
