What Are We Doing Here?steemCreated with Sketch.

What are we doing with this blockchain stuff anyway? Is the only reason we are here is for each of us to make bank and retire to some island?

While most of us do look at the financial component, my view is there is something much bigger taking place here. We are in the middle of a major FUD storm which clouds a lot of what is taking place.

Blockchain is making a ton of progress. This is something that is hard to see between the lack of users on the public ones and the mirage that are permissioned blockchains. In the later, it is the same culprits pushing forward with their claims of how wonderful their systems are.

What we are really witnessing is decentralization. This is something that is the true power of blockchain. Satoshi's genius did not come from the data structure he designed but the fact that he/she/they monetized peer-to-peer transactions. This is what changed the entire landscape of everything.

In another decade, most everything will be on blockchain. As the technology surrounding this advances, we are going to see digital IDs created that will rival our government issued one. Bear in mind, this will not happen next week. There is going to be a great deal of turmoil before all this shakes out.

Decentralization means sovereignty. This means that governments are going to have to solicit just like companies do. We are rapidly moving towards a digital world. Web 3.0 will be spatial. Everything is going to be connected. The Internet will be like electricity, there when you need it. It will also know us better than we know ourselves.

At stake is simply control. Much of what people fear with technology, AI in particular, boils down to control. Many of the ideas that are put forth about the future being horrific deals with technology being controlled by evil overlords. If this is the case, I agree. However, decentralization means that the overlords are ourselves.

Even AI is being tied to blockchain as I type these worlds. SingulairtyAI was put together by Ben Goertzel. If you ever listened to this guy, he sounds like he is on a permanent acid trip. He is also one of the leading minds on the subject of AGI there is.

This project is designed to decentralize artificial intelligence, make it transparent, and allowing AI system to communicate with each other.

Here is a short video on that project.

This must have struck a chord with some people since their ICO sold out in about 30 minutes.

At this stage of the game, we are rocking the proverbial boat. This is very disruptive force we are dealing with. Established entities are at risk of being toppled very quickly when we hit exponential growth. Again, at the core of all of this is control. The major companies want to retain control, we want to spread it out. Hence, it is not an us versus them. We are not trying to take control. We are simply disrupting theirs.

Obviously, we are all seeking to benefit ourselves and families financially. We still operate in a world where this is a necessity. However, it is imperative, especially during times of the bear, to focus upon the bigger issue. There is a lot more going on here than just a simple social media blockchain with a few neat applications. We are literally laying a foundation for the future of humanity.

The success of a blockchain such as Steem is groundbreaking. This has impact far beyond what takes place on here. Our actions are providing the blueprint for many different things going forward. Decentralization is imperative for humanity. It is vital that we not allow it to be stopped.

We are all aware of the might of Wall Street and the banking conglomerates. They operate in a manner that favors them to the detriment of everyone else. Their power is almost absolute since they own governments and corporations. In short, they run the world. It is time to change that.

I came across this article today about an individual who is intent on decentralizing the world of trading. He is using his expertise to set up a blockchain that opens up financial transactions to people without having to go through a broker. This is something long rumored to be within the capabilities of blockchain.

Please do not think I am advocating this project or view it as financial advice. I am simply pointing out what is being worked on.

One of the reasons why we are going to see a tokenized world is because it hands more power to individuals. The establishment does not like that but we are not exactly asking their permission. So far, through the major technological explosion of the last 20 years, they used it to control the masses. Nevertheless, there is the opportunity to change that.

As we move deeper into digitization with automation being more common, cryptocurrency is what will be used. Systems are not going to be set up to use fiat currencies. Instead, developers will place their own currency on the system and the AI will interact in that. It will be like having many different languages but the machine can understand them all simultaneously. Multi-token wallet systems will mean that different tokens will all be transacting at the same time.

Now we need to snap back to the present. To get to that point, we must do our part today. That is what is taking place with each post on the Steem blockchain. As we make this ecosystem bigger, we are providing a foundation for what will follow. Each new application brings something to the table that will help us along. Even the failures will offer up learning experiences for those who ensue.

There is no limit on what ideas can be tested on here.

It is time for everyone to expand their view and see how important all of this really is.

And here lies the main reason why so many people lose faith in decentralised technology...

Because it is hailed by some, as you did, as a universal solution to all modern communication technologies.

Don't get me wrong, blockchain technology has tremendous applications and clearly cryptocurrency is one of them.

But it is wrong to treat it as a 'liberation' tool against evil and oppressive organisations at the top of societies.

Oppressive regimes shutdown nodes and suppress services.
That's a fact.

The couple of hostnames servicing steem nodes can easily be suppressed by a rogue government.

What I would like to see is a balanced debate about the pros and cons of decentralised technologies and where society might benefit most.

This is not.

Frankly it doesn't help the technology from getting recognition.

We need moderation and less passion about promoting steem and other similar technologies.

Centralised information still makes a lot of sense in many many applications.

This is not about to change and claiming otherwise does nothing to help good decentralised applications to flourish.

Sure a rogue government can shut down some hostnames... but can a rogue government shut down all the hostnames servicing steem nodes? Look at the trouble various industries have had in fighting The Pirate Bay... every time they get to one, another mirror opens up. For governments to shut down Bitcoin, all governments have to act in unison.... and we all know that'll never happen ever.

Because it is hailed by some, as you did, as a universal solution

This is an easy argument to make because central banking is a universal problem.

Don't get me wrong, blockchain technology has tremendous applications and clearly cryptocurrency is one of them.

Cryptocurrency isn't one of them. It's THE ONE. Blockchain makes very little sense without cryptocurrency. The "blockchain not Bitcoin" argument is a nonsensical argument fabricated in an attempt to retain centralized control.

Im quietly excited about SingularityNET creating its AGI. Did you also watch Ben Goertzel's appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience? Absolutely fascinating stuff.

Yes I watched it. A great episode.

Goertzel is an interesting guy. He is very optimistic about AGI. There are many detractors on the other side of that argument. Some say it is decades away, others maybe never. He believes we can see it in 5-10 years.

I am not sure who will end up being right but he creates a lot of interesting stuff. I love the fact that he is decentralizing AI and set up a blockchain for it. Will that speed up the advancement? It cannot hurt. It will also help to put the AI capabilities in the hands of non-corporate individuals.

It is a project worth watching.

Thats the key, keeping AI out of the hands of any single entity or corporation. Ben understands this and hence why has decided to put his project on the blockchain to keep things decentralized and just as importantly, transparent!

The future is ultimately what we allow to become so we have paths to choose how we move forward. I think decentralization is the key to getting back control of many things in our lives: money, privacy among many others. However, we need to “flip the switch” and make that move towards it...
