STEEM: Whales Are Losing Their Power....The System Is Not Broken...Report through 4/30/19
I last reported the numbers in a post that covered through February 28, 2019.
Each month I monitor what is going on with new accounts and the amount of MVests in each category. I do this to determine what trends are taking place.
Now that we are at end of month, time to post the numbers again.
I want to thank @arcange for the work done each day compiling these numbers and making the charts.
We have 3 months worth of data for analysis purposes to see how the 90 trend might be.
The first chart is from August of 2017, the month I started on Steem. It is placed here to provide some contrast to see how things are changing over a longer period of time.

So what does this all tell us?
To start: The system is working as designed.
The Whales are losing power.
There are now 11,705 accounts who qualify as either Dolphin or Minnow. It was only a few months back when the total accounts above the approximate 500 SP (level to be a Minnow) was under 10K.
On February 28, 2019, the Whales and Orcas had 305,720 MVests (76.42% of the total). On March 31, 2019, 300,984 MVests (75.94% of the total)...a decrease of .62%. On April 30, 2019, 296,454 MVests (75.28% of the total)...a decrease of .87%.
This month we saw the Dolphins having the largest increase. The Minnows also enjoyed a decent jump while the Whales and Orcas both lost power. The Orcas saw a significant decrease after a number of months of moving higher.
One thing to note this month is how the Whale/Orca combined MVests dropped below 300,000. This is something we have not seen in a long while. They combined power is about to move below 75%, still a large amount of control but a big change over the past year and a half when those two categories controlled 90% of all the MVests.
Whales usually silent, most don't post anything. Dolphins and Orcas seems to contribute more to STEEM IMHO.
I agree completely @farizal about the Whales. They do not post which means their take of the reward pool, from the author perspective, is limited. They do tap into the curation through their support of bots.
I would not overlook the contributions of the Minnows. That group has been gain steam of late. There are now enough of them who are active that they are starting to gain momentum.
We are starting to see a nice middle class emerging. I am looking for the Dolphin/Minnow MVest total to surpass that of the Orcas in the next month or two.
That would be nice... although there is a lot more to convince new healthy users to come on board, there is still a lot of work in the path of making it easier... I know many may ask... how easy can this get... but believe me... many... need easier! Not because it's difficult... but because they hat losing time... even if they win money!
A lot of people are working hard to power up on this platform. ;)

I am curious to see if the SPUD move from yesterday had any noticeable difference in the whole thing, is there a way to see your stats on 29th of april vs 2nd of may??
I wonder if others are like me and keep buying SP and powering up with other currencies. It might show an investment into the platform by the lower levels for the long term while the whales are just holding thier SP for now.
