Proof.ink Returning Steem To It's RootssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #busy5 years ago

With all the advancements over the last couple years in blockchain, we forget about the basic essence of it.

A blockchain serves as a distributed ledger. This means that data posted on the blockchain, for the most part, is immutable. It is this mechanism that allows for trust to be established without the need of a third party. Since the transactions are all public, the blocks available for everyone to see, the data cannot be questioned.

Compare this with a centralized server that is controlled by one entity. Whatever is posted there is property of the one who controls the server. That data can be changed at any moment, without question. This is why we turn to third parties who are often regulated especially when it comes to financial matters.

I recall reading about a project by MIT that used this core feature of blockchain. It was called BitCerts and what it allowed was for educational and governmental institutions to post documents to the bitcoin blockchain. Naturally, the documents themselves were not there, that used a different server. Instead, the blockchain was used as a time stamping mechanism.

One use was by MIT who had their diplomas on there. Each student received a key that accessed the wallet showing the transactions. That was tied to MIT's system which housed the actual diploma. This means a graduate only needed to forward the key to any perspective employer which was used in an app they designed.

Proof of originality is one of the overlooked benefits of blockchain. On Steem, this is not discussed at all. @roelandp decided to change this.

He recently introduced Proof.ink. This is an application that uses the Steem blockchain to ensure the authenticity of any file. We live in a world where it is easy to manipulate documents/files. This is a system that helps to prevent that.

It is a way to ensure that the document you are looking at was not tampered with in any way.

Proof.ink works by fingerprinting your file (no matter how big), without the need to upload it, inside your browser. The result of this calculation is a unique SHA256 hash / fingerprint of your file.

How does this work?

Essentially, one use his/her Steem account to send a public transfer with a special json containing the hash. Upon checking out, you can broadcast your message using a variety of options. The system starts monitoring the transactions for your hash. Once found, you get a certified json file that is your "fingerprint".

Think of the possibilities with this. In an age where PDF software is near free, how can one ensure what is sent was not altered? Imagine sending a proposal to someone only to have them change it. Or how about a signed contract that is altered after the fact? This ensures that does not take place.

Sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs come from going back to the basics.

Here is where you can find the website: https://proof.ink/

What needs to be done now is to advertise the tool everywhere. It is free of charge to use except for a little Steem Power for the transactions. Creating a Steem account and buying what little SP is needed WITH FIAT should be possible to do in breeze on that web site. That kind of services going popular is one way the price of STEEM can reach a high and stable value.

That is a really great idea @markkujantunen. @roelandp should have an account creation function on the proof.ink site. It is something many random people need and might use and then they will find steem that way.

We definitely needed this in some of my accounting jobs. Couriers were constantly driving documents around and even flying with them since no one trusted electronic methods to not be tampered with.

I also made a post about this new product on share2steem with twitter. The product is in 3rd place right now and hopefully will go higher in a few hours. We can push things here is we all join together. I hope this will be one of those times.

yes i wanted to add that as i have the infra already made for https://steemwallet.app - but for now i link to those. but will add in the near future. thanks for bringing it up!

Fantastic work!

I think you're right about that. I hope they market Proof.Ink well, and make the buying of Steem as seamless as possible.

Im assuming this could be a great way to back important, but non criticial documents. Its amazing how I see almost a new dapp once a week being created on the Steem blockchain now. Hopefully people keep developing and this progress continues during the next bull market.

It sounds nice but I still don't understand it completely @taskmaster4450. Maybe I can only understand it by actually using it.

This is a great opportunity for using the blockchain in our professional and personal lives to maintain important documents. My question would be if their is privacy involved for the interested parties as we would not want people knowing, for example, contract details if posted on the blockchain.

The document itself is not posted to the blockchain. If it works like BitCerts, it is just a hash. In this, I believe it is embedded in the file.

Understood, this is exciting then because we can all have a repository of time stamped agreements and/or decisions if needed! Another use for our Resource Credits I am guessing!
