MEOS: Chasing The Holy Grail?steemCreated with Sketch.

in #busy5 years ago (edited)

There are more posts appearing how MEOS is going to destroy Steem and Steemit. Now we are starting to see the idea that STEEM is going to zero.

Of course, there is always that possibility, as with any investment. The issue I have is that it is not going to be because of another application.

So what is MEOS going to be? It is a question none of us can answer for sure other than Dan's tweets that it is going to be a "Steemit Killer".

Does this mean it is going to be a social media site? A blogging site? Which do you think Dan is going to go after?

If MEOS is going to be a social media site, then he needs to give up on the holy grail: quality content.

There is a simple fact that few people want to acknowledge. The Internet, especially social media, is not filled with "quality content". This is a situation that is backed up by numbers.

What are the largest social media platforms?

Here is a list that I found from August 2018. A bit dated, I know but most of them hold true.

https://www.dreamgrow.com/top-15-most-popular-social-networking-sites/

The top 3 are no surprise: Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram. The next two I am not familiar with but 6-9 are Twitter, Reddit, and Pinterest.

Now I ask you, which of those sites, which account for of the top 9, are filled with quality content?

Going a little further down the list we see Tumblr, Flickr, and Google+. In fact, while looking at blogging stats, Tumblr was listed as the top blogging platform with over 350M "blogs". Anyone who spent any time on that site knows most of the "blogs" are nothing more than pictures that people find around the Internet.

So let's see what these sites are (I will list the ones I know).

  1. Facebook: Some quality content but mostly just dopey stuff people post about their day to day activities. Lots of pics along with short comments.
  2. YouTube: A lot of quality content but a fair bit of crap. The site was made by cat videos (and copyrighted content). Probably the most quality content of any of the social media sites.
  3. Instagram: Like the rest of the Facebook trio, mobile usage means lots of pics and short replies. In fact the idea behind the app was quick hit posting. Little that would qualify as quality.
  4. QZone-don't know
  5. Weibo- ditto
  6. Twitter: hardly quality content. Mostly expanded messaging.
  7. Reddit: 99% link posting
  8. Ask.fm: online questioning site. Could be some quality in there but not a great deal.
  9. Tumblr: Over 350M blogs and most of them pictures pulled from the Internet.
  10. Flickr: Photo sharing site. Based upon what we see on Steem, we know this does not qualify as quality content.
  11. Google+: Messaging site
  12. LinkedIn: Quality content focused upon people's business along with resumes. Probably second to YouTube for quality.
  13. VK: Don't know
  14. Odnoklassniki: Ditto
  15. MeetUp: Announcement site for local gatherings.

Moving to the bloggers, here are the results of some research that was done. Again, it is a bit dated so we can alter the numbers a bit upward.

image.png

https://blogging.org/blog/how-many-websites-and-blogs-are-on-the-internet/

According to this, there were about 20M bloggers in 2016. Even if these results are low, let us five fold that. Even if there are 100M, that is a drop in the bucket compared to the entire Internet. With over 3.5B people online, there are a lot more non-bloggers than bloggers (less than 1%).

So is Dan going after the blogging community or is he going to set up a social media site? If it is the later, kick the "quality" idea to the curb. This actually isn't a bad idea since quality appears to be a holy grail on the entirety of the Internet. There is not a lot of it out there in comparison.

Maybe it is reflection on humanity but this is what people would rather post.

It is interesting to note that Stan Larimers project, Ruon, notices what the trend it. It caters to millennials and how they use the Internet.

RUON AI is a highly sophisticated, next generation Artificial Intelligence social media, chat, banking and entertainment mobile application built on Sovereignsky, space-based blockchain technology, created to help eradicate global extreme poverty.

RUON is the only social media app that allows you to earn real money and app coins for posting videos, pictures, comments and MyVideo stories. Expertly designed to reward you for the number of shares, likes and posts that you contribute to the network.

https://ruon.io/

The trend is clear: more mobile, quicker content, more frequently.

This is where the activity is which means value. Anyone who wants to see the network effect take place, this is where it is at. Blogging platforms like Medium and Blogger are nice but they are not where the masses are.

The industry would be well served to learn this lesson.

On another post, I saw that this place wants to have biometric data before you can sign up to post this them. Good luck attracting content creators with that scheme.

Keeping my head down and blogging on STEEM dApps that are already established, pay me well, and give great interaction. I'm counting on our wonderful investor and witnesses and dApp developers to keep improving STEEM.

I am already on bitshares by this dan guy. What a mess that is! Not impressed and I'm not interested in following a crazed genius while he thinks out loud.

He abandoned a great project due to a fight with guitar-playing ned. Whatever. It's only you crypto-nerds that even know about this.

Verifying that each user is a unique individual is the only way to implement account based voting without the possibility of massive fraud right out of the gate. I would be ok with biometric data used to identify me IF the program that did the identifying only calculated a hash of the data and sent it to the chain to verify that I was an individual that had not created another account. That could be accomplished by that piece of software being open source.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was because Ned didn't take requests. :D

MEOS purpose for combatting Steem one-in-one is that, EOS needs a backing of a solid-active community of users, to have a solid base for the further development of the eos technology. Only by engaging in a social media platform, can be an effective means to distribute coins and propagate the information about its crypto.

I predict that it will have a very minimal impact on the steem platform. It will also highlight the flexibility of steem blockchain on the social media arena, and its usability, as compared to eos.

Thank you.

stan larimer is dan's dad right? and he is the one behind BEOS as well (happily staking there)
That seems to be one happy blockchain family. I guess they made their millions and are now working on pet projects

Yes Stan is Dan's dad. According to Stan, they do not disclose what each other is doing to avoid conflict of interests.

The Ruon project looks very interesting. From what I could see, the app is going to be in the Instagram realm (with crypto) looking to fill a host of social media needs.

Reddit: 99% link posting

You have zero idea what you are talking about.

I've seen some pretty high quality writing and research on Reddit, or at least linked from Reddit. Unfortunately, Reddit is highly censored.

Let's see what Block One announces on June 1st. That's only a few days away. I get the feeling that there may be some "reshuffling of the deck" in the portfolios of the "quick to discern".

As a major participant in the BEOS "rainfall", I think my portfolio has already been pre-shuffled to optimum advantage. But let's see. Only a few days to wait.

ETH ... The BTC killer ... EOS ... the ETH killer .... MEOS the Steemit killer ... and yet ...

good point. they all will coexist

Thanks for this. I've seen a few posts saying steem is dead, so it's nice to have some positivity. Long live steem

Nice job on the Plankton token.

I want to help out there with some delegation. Which account do I send it to? Are you using the plankton token account to delegate the 10 SP to sub 50 SP accounts?

Hi, @taskmaster4450

Oh wow... you saw it! YAY!

Please delegate to @plankton.token, as this our main account and it will help us greatly as it is our curation and support trail for the plankton! Your delegation is much appreciated. Here's a custom delegation link <-- self promo lol

You can see our now working bot @plankton.bot - our mechanism for users to share with other plankton/redfish (only lets you tip people with <500SP)

Thanks man,

if its as complicated as beos and eos then we have no worries.
If its not simple ,easy and enjoyable to use then people won't use it regardless of how fantastic the creator thinks it is
People are lazy and people have short attention spans so something more complicated than steemit/steem ...Then i don't see any threat

Exactly. Even Steem is probably more complicated that what it's going to take for true mass appeal and compared to EOS it's a piece of cake.

Exactly, who on earth going to bother with RAM and CPU management? Even RC here already such huge roadblock for adoption.

You just planted 0.10 tree(s)!

What’s this his fourth project now? I figure he’s not actually concerned with the holy grail because he’s selling the pamphlets with the secret map 😅

Honestly I think the first solid social media site that pays out crypto will be the push for adoption every other platform rides on, let’s hope Dan opens that door for us 🤞

„Serial Scammer“ was a title I read on the internet. I think that nails it.

Lol I like that one 👌

Btw. with minds.com there already is a social network that „pays crypto“ (their own eth based token). I follow them since 2017 for their open source Social Network stack long before they made the token. Tech might be nice, but there are too many right wing weirdos there, so I‘m not active there.

I have yet to really look too deeply at minds, I do intend to but what you said is basically what I suspect any crypto social media to be just a matter of one making a main stream impact.

Yeah, I'm believing more and more that the value is in curating the assload of content out there for specific people rather than specifically authoring it unless you're THAT special

One problem with that is bots. Pretend people can pretend curate really well, but don't buy anything. Until there's a way to pay actual people to curate, instead of funding bot development, that's not going to be much of a business model for a platform.
