Doesn't the percentage of your economy dependent on trade affect things? What was the USA's trade as a share of GDP back in the 1930's?
Well, the great inter-state system wasn't built till the 1950's so I expect that the coastal states did more foreign trade before than than bought stuff from the American interior.
