Where is the Grass Greener?
I have been mowing the lawn and cutting weeds for many years as it was also the way I would get some money when I was young. My parents would pay me to mow the lawn when I was a teenager years ago. It taught me how to really appreciate work and also be resourceful as it takes hard work to save money. This is why I guess I was able to really become a pretty good money manager as my life always revolved around a budget.
My parents also gave me money for college when I started to take courses and told me that I was responsible for getting my education paid for as well as figuring out how to pay for anything I needed while in College which included a place to live, transportation, and food. I attribute this experience to why I have been able to leverage the opportunities presented to me and have a relatively good career so far.
However, I realized something interesting today that I know I have thought about before but not until I related it to my experience on Steem did it not really sync in for me. As I was mowing the lawn and thinking of the many things I really needed to get done when I finished, I thought about why I should stop really mowing the lawn to get things done that is worth more than the cost of paying someone to mow the lawn for me. While I have thought about this in the past, I have really tried to be resourceful and save that money in my effort to continue to run a surplus to work on paying down the debt that I created by bad decision years ago.
We often think about this as a cost/benefit analysis. If it costs me $50 to pay someone to mow the lawn for me, what benefit do I get in return? The way I see it is that the two hours (more or less) I spend every 2-4 weeks on my lawn could be used better on other things worth more than the $50. For example, the simple ability to spend more time with my family during the weekend would probably be enough for this. However, I even got into thinking about my efforts of research and engagement in the cryptocurrencies and Steem itself. The value of the research I do could be the opportunity I need to allocate my capital more efficiently or other ventures that may present themselves.
As I reflected on this, I start to struggle about Steem itself given the issues I have had lately of continuing my engagement given the circumstances around my professional career. It has continued to be a busy time for me at work but it has been actually pretty good as the role I have taken has given me the access to learning more and having more influence in the organization. In fact, I have seen that my presence continues to grow from a senior management level which has had great implications for even my future. Where it becomes a challenge is that it takes from the time I have to do things I have enjoyed such as Steem and engaging in the ecosystem. However, using the same barometer above, I am not sure how the cost/benefit works in this case.
I am not here for short term gains or rewards nor for solely the financial aspect. While I really want this to be long term successful and build value for the long term, I am unsure how my engagement will ultimately correlate with these goals. I continue to work hard on providing engagement and build value but the reality is that time is limited and the efforts need to be prioritized to do our best with our lives. Today, I made the decision to no longer mow my own lawn; instead, I will pay for it to be done in the future. Now I wonder what to do with the extra time I gained?

What a coincidence @newageinv. I just came from working out in our yard and taking a break, sitting in my "comfy chair, the first thing I did was come back "in here" and started with reading your post here.
Well written and reflective on some serious questions. You and I share some things in common, when it comes to understanding work. My first step beyond doing yard work for the "grandma ladies" in our neighbor was a paper route in the 7th grade. Up through paying my way thru college, like you. Those experiences teach us a lot, don't they?
This closing statement stood out to me:
That is definitely the "reality check" for me. Sounds like you are wrestling with it as well.
I'll look forward to future posts on the topic and what you ultimately decide.

I have plenty of travel ahead of me the next 30 days and I think it will help me figure this out as I know I don't have the answer yet. I think that there is so much to enjoy here and I often am more concerned with what I miss instead of what I have gotten out of alternatives! Time will tell for sure!
Greetings @newageinv
You indicate that your parents taught you how to value money, they taught you to earn money through effort and financial strategy. And from what we can observe, they taught you very well. We must congratulate your parents. I would do the following, the day I touch mowing the lawn I would ask my daughter to help me with the task, and that after finishing, I would reward her with a good ice cream or a trip to the park (something that she likes). With this I would transmit the same values that they gave you. Transmit good values to children is priceless.A great idea indeed! I have already setup some challenges for her over the summer as she prepares for the next school year with incentives. Her allowance will start next year which will be interesting to see how she accepts it responsibly.
It has to be done. I have an old lad who does mine every two weeks. I did the math before and it would cost me more to buy the lawnmower than for him to do it for the next three years. That is without taking into account any extra money or time like repairs and petrol to do it.
Not that i am using that time for anything special but it's nice to come home from work and the job is already done for me. Plus he is an old guy that is doing a few in the area just to keep active. Win win really.
Agreed! Except for some extra steps and sweat, I will rather much enjoy the family time!
The truth is, there is never enough time for one to do everything we want. Just take care of stuff that are deemed necessary first and the rest can wait in line.
Cheers

Time is the most valuable asset as we can never get back what is spent!
Spending a 50$ to mow the grass i think its bit expensive to do it.

I think so too considering it is about an hour or two of time but the reality is that it has become cumbersome for me and the family which have limited time on the weekends.
I recall mowing the lawn at home as a kid. We had a lot of land so we used a ride-on lawn mower which was sort of fun. We used to need a roster or we'd fight over who got to drive around all day. I used to pretend I was driving a race car back as a 9 year old. Kind of funny thinking about it now considering I pay someone to mow my lawn now.
That is funny! I can see how riding a mower would be fun as a kid! Not much land here so makes no sense to spend that money for it. Thanks for passing by!
More than one argument, and one shed tear was the result of failure to adhere to the ride-on lawn mower schedule. :)
It definitely does relate to Steem as there may be better ways to utilize your time. But, there is an opportunity cost in that too depending on your wants for the future here.
When it comes to creating content, I think it is worthwhile to use it like you have your time mowing the lawn, a reflective experience that allows you to order your thoughts and make better decisions. This is valuable in my opinion and something that we rarely allow ourselves unless we create an environment where we automatically do it. For me, that is Steem. It is a meditation, a therapy and an investment rolled into one :)
Totally agree as I tend to look back at my content and comparing to how I feel and I can relate often and see the changes over time. The opportunity costs could be huge as well given my thoughts of the potential of what is being built here which is why I struggle so much currently as I would like to do this full time in reality!
