Paris - A museum in the southern region of France, has just realized that more than half the collection of art objects, is a fake item.

The astounding findings were announced to the public at the weekend, and made riot not only among French citizens, but also art lovers.

Quoted from The Straits Times on Monday (30/4/2018), Musée Etienne Terrus - the name of the museum - is dedicated to commemorate the existence of Etienne Terrus, a well known local artist as a surreal visual pioneer.

The museum is located in the city of Perpignan has undergone a major renovation for almost two years, before the official return opened on Friday, April 27, 2018.

However, Eric Forcada, an art historian who was invited to re-curate, found irregularities in about 80 paintings owned by the museum.

Forcada found 60 percent of the eighty paintings proved to be completely fake.

"Etienne Terrus is a great painter Elne.He is part of the community (citizens), he is our painter," Mayor Yves Barniol said on Friday.

"Knowing that people have visited museums and seen collections that are mostly fake is bad, this is a disaster for this city," Barniol continued.

As a result of the scandal revealed above, the museum was forced to close again for an unspecified time.

"We will ensure that these embarrassing incidents do not happen again in the future, so the public can appreciate the work of art as it should," he added.

Forcada says that he has seen firsthand, most of the work is fake. "In one painting, the ink sign was erased when I touched it slowly, using white gloves."

He warned the cultural attaché in the region immediately brought together panel experts, to confirm his findings.

Of the total 140 art objects collected, Focada confirmed as many as 82 of them falsely indicated. The details are 66 paintings declared not totally original, and 16 other works have partial false signs on the surface of the canvas.

Forcada said that before the scandal was revealed, the average price of one painting by Etienne Terrus could be sold up to 15,000 euros, or about Rp 252 million.

As for the various visual works whose colors are swept through the watercolor medium, it is estimated to be able to sell up to 2,000 euros or about Rp 33.6 million per one collection.

Meanwhile, Barniol Mayor insisted on continuing the investigation, to the point where anyone responsible was responsible for the scandal.
