Yesterday I was watching a TV show Emerald city and for the millionth time in life I heard the phrase "Get some hot water and towels!". So I decided to do a little research on that subject to see are there some real need for it or is it just a movie gimmick that doesn't have grounds in real life. Her is what I come up with after researching on Google, Reddit, and Yahoo:

There are real-life grounds for it. Sanitary reasons mostly. Hot water was used to wash and sterilize everything that is needed in the birthing process. Towels were used for cleanup because birth can get really quickly really messy. Also, a hot wet towel was held over perineum to prevent tearing while the baby is crowning.

Usually, when a new baby is coming into the world there is a father to be running around like heddles chicken. Getting him to fetch hot water an towels is a good way to get him out of way and make him feel useful and helping.

One Reddit use said that hot water is used to make soup in case the baby is stillborn. :)

I mentioned TV show Emerald city. It is a modern take on Wizzard of Oz with a lot of dark twists in style of Game of Thrones. It was filmed on locations in Croatia, Spain, and Hungary. Since I am from Croatia I will highlit the parts from Croatia. The City of Oz was inspired by Dubrovnik, and lands of Free Tribes were filmed in Plitivca lakes. More on Plitvica lakes you can find out in this post.
