Wednesday Walking in villagers’ vegetable garden in Nongkhai, เดินเล่นชมสวนผักที่ชาวบ้านปลูก

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay. The weather in Nongkhai this winter has been very nice and cool. The sky is often bright blue which contrasts beautifully with the green trees and fields. This cool weather has been very beneficial for growing vegetables.

A few days ago,I went for a walk to see the results in some vegetable gardens around my place.

As soon as I entered the vegetable patch, the old lady and her husband greeted me standing like small kids in front of a teacher! Grandma Bee and grandpa Som have been growing several vegetables: tomatoes, pumpkins, coriander, spring onions, chili, some basil and local herbs.

That day a few gardeners were out picking ripe tomatoes for the merchant who would come to collect crates of tomatoes in the evening.

I was quite shocked to hear that the price of tomatoes has been much lowered this year. The whole crate of tomatoes get only 100 baths (about 3 dollars). The gardener told me that there seemed to be a glut of tomatoes at the central market in Udon, where all agricultural produce came on for pricing and negotiation before distribution in the region. I guessed the middlemen make most of the profits. These tomatoes are organic so they should get higher price but most consumers are more concerned about lower prices. The competition from cheap imported tomatoes and over supply of local produce this year make these villagers very discouraged and rather sad. But they are keeping a cheerful face by accepting reality. I will have to find out what better plants should replace tomato crops next year.

สัปดาห์ที่แล้ว อากาศที่หนองคายดีมาก ท้องฟ้าสดใสทุกวัน แดดออกทำให้ถึงเวลาเก็บมะเขือเทศสุกของชาวสวน เราจึงออกไปเดินเล่นสวนผักแถวบ้าน เดินไปเจอยายบีและตาสมกำลังรดน้ำผัก สองคนก็เดินมาทักทายและ ยืนตรงเหมือนนักเรียนยืนเคารพครูที่โรงเรียน เราจึงถ่ายรูปไว้ดูเล่น ตายายปลูกผักหลายอย่างเพื่อไปขายที่ตลาดในหมู่บ้าน มีมะเขือเทศ พริก มะเขือ ต้นหอมผักชี ฟักทองและมันเทศ รายได้แบบเศรษฐกิจพอเพียงทำให้สามารถดำรงชีวิตได้ทั้งครอบครัว

วันนั้นชาวสวนมาช่วยกันเก็บมะเขือเทศใส่ลัง ตอนเย็นพ่อค้าจะมารับไปส่งขายที่ตลาดในอุดร อากาศร้อนขึ้นตอนกลางวันสักสามชั่วโมง เขาต้องมีกระติกน้ำและอาการกลางวันสำหรับเติมพลังในมื้อเที่ยง ปีนี้อากาศเย็นทำให้กะกลํ่าปลีออกมาดูสวยงามมาก แต่ราคามะเขือเทศต่ำเกินคาด เพราะของนำเข้าราคาถูกมากและ ผลผลิตในท้องถิ่นก็มากเกินไป ชาวสวนก็รู้สึกค่อนข้างแย่ น่าเสียดายเพราะมะเขือเทศพวกนี้ปลอดสารเคมี เราให้เขาใช้ปุ๋ยอินทรีย์กันแถวนี้ เราคงต้องช่วยคิดว่า ปีหน้าจะปลูกอะไรทดแทนมะเขือเทศดี จึงจะมีรายได้คุ้มค่าเหนื่อยมากกว่านี้

Cooler weather this month is just perfect for growing organic cabbages. The spring onions are also doing very well.
