Countryside Lifestyle Photography: Collecting sweet potatoes by the , ขุดหามันเทศที่ริมโขง

This is my entry for #thaiphotocontest35 on countryside lifestyle photography. Last weekend, I saw some villages coming out to dig their plot of land for big sweet potatoes in the evening.

The villagers brought their whole family out to help with the digging and collecting of sweet potatoes. They started working during the sunset so the weather was cooling down for children to help with the work in the field. Children were competing on who would get bigger sweet potatoes from the earth. The villagers had to clean up the sweet potatoes before putting them into big plastic bags. Each bag had to be weighted for ten kilos.

Another member of the family brought a tuk-tuk to park on the road side by their land. The stronger villagers had to carry these plastic bags up to the road to be nicely packed inside this vehicle. Working as a big team of close families made the work less strenuous and more fun for young children. But I noticed that those women worked much harder and faster than older men. This might have something to do with the state of their health. The men are often heavy drinkers of moonshine and cheap alcohol which are very bad for their health in the long run.

เมื่อวันอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมา เราพาเพื่อนไปปั่นจักรยานริมแม่น้ำโขง เราได้เห็นวิถีชีวิตของชาวบ้านในตอนเย็น ชาวบ้านพาครอบครัวมาช่วยกันขุดมันเทศ ตอนนี้เป็นฤดูการเก็บผลผลิตไปส่งตลาด. เด็กดูจะสนุกกับการขุดหัวมันเทศมาก เขาแข่งกันหาหัวมันเทศหัวใหญ่ๆ. พวกผู้หญิงช่วยกันทำความสะอาด โดยตัดใบออกและเอาขี้ดินออกด้วย ทุกคนขนหัวมันมากองรวมกันไว้. บางคนมีหน้าที่คัดมันเทศใส่ถุงพลาสติกขนาดใหญ่ ที่ใส่ได้ถึงสิบกิโลกรัม แล้วเอาเชือกผูกปากถุง คนที่แข็งแรงมากกว่าคนอื่นก็มาขนถุงมัน ขึ้นมากองข้างถนน เพื่อรอให้แม่ค้าขับรถตุ๊กตุ๊ก มาขนถุงมันเทศไปส่งที่ตลาด

เราสงสารคนแบกถุงมันมาก เพราะถนนริมแม่นํ้าถูกสร้างไว้สูงจาก พื้นดินด้านล่างเกือบหกเมตร เขาต้องเดินไต่ขึ้นมาบนที่สูงชันกับถุงหนักสิบกิโล หลายสิบรอบ จนกว่าของจะเต็มหลังรถ เราสังเกตว่าพวกผู้หญิงทำงานหนักกว่าและเร็วกว่าพวกผู้ชายมาก ดูเหมือนสุขภาพของชาวบ้านผู้ชายไม่ค่อยดี อาจเป็นเพราะว่าพวกผู้ชายชอบดื่มเหล้าขาว และเหล้าแรงแต่ราคาย่อมเยาว์ ทำให้มีผลต่อสุขภาพมาก การทำเกษตรกรรมเป็นงานที่ต้องใช้ความอดทน และใช้แรงอึดมาก แต่ผลตอบแทนน้อยและไม่แน่นอน ราคาผลผลิตก็มักจะตกตํ่า ทำให้แทบจะไม่ได้กำไรกันในแต่ละฤดูกาล
