Central World is the place for New Year’s Count Down in Bangkok.

This is my entry for #beautifulsunday created by @ace108. We have five days public holidays in Thailand at the moment. So, half of the people are experiencing traffic jam on all main roads outside Bangkok. Most people are going back home to spend their holidays with their families. Bangkok roads are so stress-free for drivers, so I should check out the most famous venue for the New Year party: the Central World shopping complex in down town Bangkok. This big mall is a few minutes’ walk from the two skytrain stations: Siam and Chitlom. It is opposite the Brahman Statue known by the Chinese as ‘Four face Buddha’ at the corner of Hyatt Erawan Hotel.

I am quite surprised by the number of people taking photos with the Christmas and New Year’s decorations in front of Central World shopping mall. There are people of all ages especially lots of families with young children having a good time with the cartoon figures and Christmas trees. This means that this year more people are likely to come here for the end of year’s party. There would be many stalls selling street food, a few beer gardens, two stages for live bands and entertainments by well known pop singers and film stars. I expect at least half a million people here for the New Year’s Count Down.

The skytrain service will operate till 2 o’ clock in the morning so that party goers could return home after the party. The roads around this area will be closed to traffic and become walking streets. There would be tight screening and security measures all around the venue with hundreds of uniformed security guards and plain cloth policemen. This parting area is only a few hundred meters from an important but small palace and right in the middle of the financial district.

I am quite impressed by the generous and polite manner of most Thai people here as there is no pushing or competing for the best spots to take their selfies. They wait their turns to be at the best spots and they are not in the slightest angry when they get photo bombed by me! I unwittingly walk across so many mobile phones! These people are having a good time with their children, families and friends. I am amazed by how simple and easy they could find happiness in small precious moments and their selfies! People with small children would not come to the final party of the year as the crowd would be very intimidating and noisy for babies and young kids. The finale display of fireworks after the stroke of midnight would be the wow factor to greet the first day of 2020. The whole party would be televised live on tv in tandem with count downs in other big cities in Thailand such as Chiengmai and Khon Kaen. So, I will be watching the fireworks on high rise building while having my herbal tea and chocolate cake!

Some people take their dolls to party! Luckily, no one takes either a dog or cat in a pushing pram to this place!

เราไปเดินสำรวจสถานที่นับถอยหลังปีเก่า และต้อนรับปีใหม่มา. เราแปลกใจมากที่มีคนมาเดินเที่ยวเล่น และถ่ายรูปที่หน้าห้างเซ็นทรัลเวิล์ดมากหลายร้อยคน จนดูแทบไม่มีที่เดินทีเดียว ตอนนี้มีวันหยุดยาวถึงห้าวัน คนไทยส่วนหนึ่งเดินทางไปต่างจังหวัด ทำให้ถนนออกจากเมืองหลวงหนาแน่นไปด้วยยานพาหนะ แต่คนที่ไม่เดินทางออกไป ก็หาที่เที่ยวเล่นกับครอบครัวกันตามห้างใหญ่ๆ เพราะเขามีการตกแต่งไว้อย่างสดใสสวยงาม เพื่อให้ลูกค้าไปถ่ายรูป แล้วจะได้ไปใช้จ่ายเงินในห้างด้วย เราก็ไม่เคยเห็นคนแห่กันมาถ่ายรูปกับต้นคริสมาตมากขนาดนี้มาก่อน.

ในวันสุดท้ายของปี ที่บริเวณนี้จะกลายเป็นปาร์ตี้ใหญ่มหึมา มีร้านอาหารหลายร้านและร้านเบียร์ด้วย ถนนรอบๆจะกลายเป็นถนนคนเดิน และมีการตรวจสอบความมั่นคงอย่างเข้มข้น. จะมีตำรวจนอกเครื่องแบบหลายร้อยคน และเจ้าหน้าที่รักษาความปลอดภัยมากมาย. เวทีจะมีวงดนตรีเล่นสลับกันหลายวง มีนักร้องและดาราสลับกันขึ้นเวที และที่ทุกคนรอคอย คือการนับถอยหลังปีเก่า และฟังเสียงนาฬิกาตีบอกเวลาวันใหม่ สุดท้ายคือการจุดพลุแบบรัวๆ ขึ้นบนท้องฟ้า คนก็จะโห่ร้องด้วยความยินดี และตื่นเต้น ในการต้อนรับวันแรกของปี 2020. ส่วนตัวเราก็คงคอยดูพลุจากตึกสูงๆ ดื่มชาสมุนไพร กับกินช็อคโกแล็ตเค๊กไปพร้อมกับการนับถอยหลังปีเก่านั่นเอง
