Gyüttment Festival - House from straw? Yes!
Everyone likes the smell of sun-dried straw. Kids love to jump and bounce, and also good to have a rest in straw. In stables, straw is used as bedding for the animals. Who would think a house could be built of straw? Do you remember the story of the three little pigs? If so, just forget it!
Straw is a gift of nature

On Friday, I listened to a lecture held by a man from Szabadka, Serbia. He is an architect, who himself built his own house from recycled wood, straw, and clay found on the site. In his performance, he compared the various eco-design techniques, including traditional adobe brick houses, hillocks, the so called "super adobe", "hemp-concrete" and straw houses. Straw house is the most suitable for the Hungarian climatic conditions.

The thermal insulation capacity of the straw is very good, so the heating cost of the house is minimal. Because of its natural ventilation, it provides pleasant comfort during winter and summer.

With the finished building you can not decide whether it is made of straw because the walls are covered with clay plaster, which makes it resistant to weather conditions. Moreover, building such a house does not burden the environment!
At the Gyüttment festival, there was an opportunity to try to build a straw wall. People enjoyed to work with mud, especially children.

Is the straw house flammable? Good question! There were independent experiments, how flammable is that. The straw itself is very flammable, but when it is compressed, coated with 5 cm clay, it can even withstand 1000 degrees for 2 hours.
Other enemy is water. How to protect a straw house from water? Do not build it in flood basin! Top of a hill or hillside is much better. The edge of the roof should be at least one and a half meter away from the wall.
How long can you live in a straw house? If properly maintained, many generations can live up to 100 years or beyond. The oldest, still standing straw house was built in 1901 in Nebraska.
@kalemandra, have you tried creating a straw house too?
Not yet, but I will!

Wonderful photography ...
