The government of Belgium is making a contribution of 2 million euros to promote a Blockchain project of the World Food Program (WFP), according to an announcement by the entity on April 19.

According to reports, the contribution will allow the United Nations (UN) to use Blockchain technology to fight hunger in impoverished areas. The "Building Blocks" project is run together with other agencies in the United Nations and has been implemented to make WFP cash transfers to refugees more efficient and transparent.

More than 100,000 Syrian refugees in the camps in Jordan have benefited from the project, using donations provided by supporters of the cause to obtain food and other basic necessities.

The project was presented at Leveraging Innovation for Humanitarian Action in New York. Commenting on Belgium's contribution to the initiative, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation of the country, Alexander De Croo, said:

"Innovation saves lives. This year, more than 128 million people around the world will need humanitarian assistance and protection. This is triple three years ago. Only by finding better ways to distribute aid more efficiently will we close the gap between the requirements and the delivery of support in the field. Belgium praises WFP's efforts to find innovative solutions to save more lives and help more people in need. "

In May of last year, the UN announced its plans to use the Ethereum Blockchain to ensure that refugees in Jordan have access to food rations by distributing coupons that would be used instead of the local currency. The technology had already been tested by WFP in Pakistan and benefited more than 10,000 people.
