A. History of Islamic Education in Aceh
Overall it can be said that Aceh before being fought by bBelanda in 1873 was a royal area. There are several kingdoms in Aceh in the past, namely Pereulak Islamic empire in East Aceh, Jempa Kingdom in North Aceh, Pidie Kingdom in Aceh Pidie and Daya empire in West Aceh. Among the famous kingdoms to date the Kingdom of Pase and the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam.
In the seventeenth century the Islamic kingdom of Atjeh was still noted as one of the strongest and most developed nations among the 5 world nations of the Mughal Empire in India, Safavid Kingdom of Isfahan, Moroccan Islamic Empire in Morocco, the Ottoman Empire and the Islamic empire of Aceh Darussalam in Aceh. A country will be strong if its political economy is strong, and its military. It is all obtained through educational institutions, both formal education and through exercises.
The kingdom of Pase and kingdom of Aceh Darussalam, as well as other kingdoms in Aceh at that time was the Islamic empire. So it can be understood that the education that apply to the kingdom is Islamic religious education. This kind of thing not only applies to the pase kingdom and the kingdom of Aceh Darussalam but also to the whole country of Islam. Children are educated by their parents, either directly by their own Mother Fathers or submitted to study at the home of a Master or at a place of study such as in the Mosque or Meunasah. At that time there was no school system like the school today. The only place to learn for the public is Dayah, while Meunasah serves as a learning place for children in villages and old people in religion.
When examined the historical development of education in Indonesia and Aceh in particular, then we will conclude, that Dayah is quite meritorious in educating the nation. Maybe if the Dutch do not come to ACEH to fulfill their desire to colonize the Acehnese including destroying a number of Dayah educational institutions along with the books in the library, maybe the Acehnese is still one of the nations among developed nations in this world.
The hermitage of the educational world of that time can be seen from the names of some great Ulema with his dayah who have left the name of fragrant for religion and society and his articles in the field of religion, morals, history and others. Education dayah at that time began at low level, middle to high level. If the lesson at home or in Meunasah is generally low level. But if Teungku or Ulama is invited to teach at home there is also a high level even also at a special level in a branch of knowledge. For example, to teach the sons of Uleebalang and prominent people.
Education in Dayah if the low level is usually taught by a santri who already high knowledge. Similarly in the middle part taught by a queue who has higher knowledge. The students were called Teungku Rangkang, while Teungku-teungku Rangkang was preached by Teungku Syik (Ulama Besar) who is usually the leader of the dayah itself.
At the time of the sultanate in Aceh, Dayah education institutions are progressing very rapidly. This is evidenced by the number of dayah in Aceh Continue to develop, as well as the number of Ulama who teach, in addition to local Ulama increasingly growing sulthan also mengundan Ulama-scholars from abroad. The scholars are invited not only to teach but also to the needs of their own kingdom as a consultant in the field of religious law. Some scholars have deepened their knowledge abroad, especially to Makkah and to Medina.
Another evidence is that there are a number of internationally reputable scientific books written by a number of Acehnese Ulema. Some of their relics have long been the subject of study by university scientists at international universities. The Thought of Aceh's Ulema (Hamzah Alfansuri, Syamsuddin al-Sumaterani, Nur al-Din Ar-Raniri and Abdurrauf As-Singkili) have given the color of Islamic thought in Southeast Asia since the 16th-17th century even today. The full 30th Tafseer of the 30th Malay (now the Indonesian language) was first written by the Aceh Ulema, Sheikh Abdurrauf As-Singkili.
