Freewrite Day 461 In The Limelight

Freewrite in the limelight fitinfun.jpg

You are “in the limelight” when you are famous and renowned and that is as far as I am going with this one. I’m not looking it up! But I am pretty sure some of my fellow freewriters are doing just that. @mariannewest is on a roll this week.

Most of us want to be in the limelight and have people notice us and look up to us. But you never know what that is like until you have it. Many “stars” wish they were not so well-known.

When I lost weight it was a bit like that in the small town I lived in. I was “famous” for losing weight. One of @bxlphabet’s friends got out her cell phone and took a picture of me, “Mom will never believe me and I will show her this photo.”

When I was obese I had total anonymity. People do not notice or see fat people. They look right through you (or around you) when you are obese.

I used this fact of life to get away with a lot of things. I used to get backstage at concerts. This was before all the security of these days. But people would think I had to be working there. No one as fat as me would be where they did not belong.

Little did they know.

Once I got thin I was in the limelight for the first time in my life and it was terrifying. People LOOKED at me.

I’m over it now. But it took a few years.

And now in SE Asia I am not thin. Just fairly normal if not big. This suits me just fine because I already stand out in other ways here. I’m old, white, and have no husband. How weird.

My post is for the #freewrite daily challenge by @mariannewest. Freewrite is a great way to post on steemit when you do not think you have the time, or talent, or anything to say. It’s a great way to start regular posting on steemit. I know you can do this too! Here is Marianne’s freewrite prompt post for today. Give it a try and surprise yourself.

Situation Critical – My rent and wifi are not paid and now are both overdue

UPDATE: I am so happy and relieved to tell you that:

  • my rent and a wifi top up have been paid.
  • the money sent to my US paypal account is on its way and will be here next week.

A bigger post describing current events will be posted soon, but I want to let anyone checking on me know that the first part of the situation is solved and that at least I will not be cut off from the world without a roof over my head.

I am so grateful to you all.

I am dedicated to STEEM and trying hard to carry on with your help. Here are some ways you can help and I would love to hear of any suggestion you may have for me.

It is almost Super Bowl Sunday. Statistics say that only 5% of people with health resolutions for the New Year will still be on track. Is your fitness equipment still out and are you still on a "diet?"

I lost "Half My Size" eight years ago by using natural methods. I started on December 5th and did not give up. You can do it too!

This is Sharon @fitinfun. I am posting:

Please follow along or contact me directly if you would like some individual help with weight loss and health. Anyone can do this if I did.

People do not notice or see fat people. They look right through you (or around you) - wow! How about a #FatLivesMatter campaign? The discrimination against *millions of people goes on daily, year after year, with overweight people passed up for jobs and "Swiped Left" on dating apps. This is a fantastic post, @fitinfun, with so many great insights. The shock of being "in the limelight" after being "invisible" (love the concert anecdote) is fascinating. This: it was terrifying. People LOOKED at me. I’m over it now. But it took a few years. I've never been popular or sought-after and I'm now more comfortable as a recluse, even though I should get out of the house. Well, there's one insight you got wrong: "old white woman" is not the term for a strong, wise survivor!

Currently 40% of Americans are obese and 40% are overweight. Those are actually old stats and I think it is worse now. I don't try for acceptance of fat - I try for change. Fat people are made fun of all day long and I do not see this changing.

Your comment reminds me of my horrific 6 month failed attempt at online dating. I did it a couple years after I lost the weight. I thought I was time to "find someone." I was in the best shape ever due to 3X a week swimming.

I had 4 dates in person. The longest was one hour. The rest were 20 minutes each. All of the men said I was the first woman they met who was the weight they said they were - all the others they went on dates with had been fat even though their profile said they were thin.

I never knew how much I used and valued my invisibility until it was gone. It was all I could do to not get fat again to push back the fear. But I had two roles models who warned me this would happen. I would never be able to go though the change from fat to thin a second time so I just stay thin now.

I'm a hermit myself, but I still have to go out to shop and for errands lol.

I also don't like to be in the limelight. You have gone through so many things in life - and I am glad to hear this off-hand from you. I hope whatever I typed make sense because I am tired now due to many days of spring cleaning. Chinese New Year is coming and my parents are coming too. I pray your situation will get better.

Hi @sharon,

You made inevitable possible by becoming ultra slim from being obese for quite a long time. You have captured a place in our hearts not only for this, but also for your fantastic freewrites!
