The tombs of Philipp the Bold and John the Fearless were originally in the Chartreuse of Champmol. Splendidly restored after the vissitudes of the French revolution, they were set up in 1827 in the Palace Banquet Hall. They are among the most prestigious late mediaeval funerary monuments.

Philipp the Bolds tomb was the model for his sons (John the Fearless) tomb



These weeping figures,wrapped in cloaks with generous folds, are in eternal mourning for the Prince. Arranged in a long cotège, they express the complete ranger of feelings from bereavement to hope.


Both tombs are empty the bodies of the dead were buried in a crypt underneath
sanctuary of Chartreuse de Champmol.
