Young bucks, engaging in a little rutting behavior (swipe down to see young doe). San Juarn Island is home to a rather large deer population, as all natural predators were removed by settlers in order to protect their livestock. By the late 1800's all bears, cougars, and wolves had been eradicated from the archipelago. As a result, the deer on SJI and surrounding islands tend to be smaller and leaner than their mainland counterparts.

Hunting is not a viable method of population control here, since the island is so small that rifle hunting is not safe Landowners are permitted to allow other types of hunting on their property, and are even offered up to $1,000 by the WDFW to do so, but so far no one has taken them up on it. I was curious about the deer population, and found the above information from a 2017 article in the Islands Sounder.

The more you know about them, the greater the intention to save. Young bucks are threatened with extinction because they are constantly being hunted, thank you that this information is useful.
