We’re on the Road! This time the Bird's destination was the Florida Keys!

Curry Hammock State Park

Curry Hammock State Park is located on US 1, Florida Overseas Highway, just south of Marathon, Florida. Curry Hammock became a state park in 1991 and was named after a revered Miami teacher Lamar Louise Curry. This park is small in stature but holds such beauty.

Even though this was a last minute trip we were able to find wonderful spot with the Atlantic to our side. Two miles of the Heritage Trail pass through Curry Hammock. This trail which follows the path of the Overseas Railroad provides a path for hikers and bikers to access Marathon.

Birding is very popular at Curry Hammock with the Florida Keys Hawkwatch Monitoring the Hawk and Falcon activity on a daily basis.

Daily tallies, monitored with telescopic cameras in the Florida heat. As you can see, quite a wide variety of birds flying through the Keys.

The beaches were peaceful, the birds lovely. Amazing time to take a stroll and enjoy our winged friends!

I wanted to share a glimpse of our first visitor to our campsite. Mr. Bird and I were just sitting down to enjoy dinner when something caught my eye! Needless to say my first words were … Leaping Lizards!! He walked through the campsite, turned around and decided to pose for photos!

The Green Iguana

These herbivores are believed to have been brought to the Florida Keys as stowaways on ships bearing fruit sailing from the Caribbean to the Keys. Native to Central/South America and the Caribbean it has become invasive in some areas of Florida. Males can grow to be 5 feet long. Our visitor was only about 2 ½’ in length. The juveniles are green in color and as they age they turn a tan color with black stripes on their tail.

I am convinced he enjoyed the photo shoot!

Stopping to check us out before escaping to enjoy his nightly dinner of fruits and leaves. Based upon the path through our campsite it was evident we were intruding!

The wildlife at Curry Hammock State Park is just as interesting and beautiful as the coastline. I’ll be sure to share more about that later my friends! Nothing like a few days to re-charge your batteries!

Hope you enjoyed a glimpse of Curry Hammock State Park. We certainly did! We can't wait to go back!

And as always, blessings to you all!
