IT'S ALL ABOUT OPEN SOURCE

You probably expect me to define open source . No I won't . I will just explain it.

Open source is giving for the pure purpose of giving.
I mean giving without expecting something in return. That sounds confusing. Open source is like skill charity. You contribute your coding or maybe graphic skills to a project just for the purpose of pushing the project forward , nothing else. I think that explains open source.

Open source has a lot to do with programming but I think in the future it will become way bigger than that. I will even refer to "crowdfunding" as a kind of financial open-sourcing and that is why, even before utopian , steemit itself, is a kind of an all-rounder open source commmunity because I think the basic principle of success on the STEEM BLOCKCHAIN is to try and give cheerfully but totally. By 'totally' , I mean giving your values through your posts without expecting upvotes, I know that is crazy. Really crazy! but that is the truth. For instance, I should be writing an UTOPIAN tutorial now and get $25 but I am so tired. Not the normal tired, I mean tired in the sense of being bored. I just want write something that touches a heart , I need a break from codes, maybe I will write codes tomorrow. So in short, I am writing without expecting upvotes, I am giving myself out without expecting anything in return. I will probably get upvotes but that doesn't seem like a sure thing.

So back to utopian.io, Utopian needs you to give codes, tutorials , documentations and the likes to the open source community because you want the respective projects you are contributing to to move forward. If you don't have that mindset, their binoculars will detect your 'unholy' intentions, and then rejections will possibly come in post after posts. I don't pray that happens to you but you really need to understand this principle.

I just explained the philosophical side of open source, here is the technical aspect. GITHUB!!!. As far as that is concerned, I think that is the only thing you need to understand as far as UTOPIAN open source technicality is concerned. GITHUB is a repository (store-house) for open source projects, all codes are publicly available for others to contribute to. I wouldn't explain much on github , I probably would have to write a mini-textbook on that, it is not that hard, it's just quite elaborate, most especially when you want to be explicit and comprehensive about all its features from web interface to github desktop and then to the command prompt interface. Nevertheless, I am about to say something you might not agree with, if you can operate a remote control , you can operate github, the only reason why people can't use it is because they have not tried to, it could be confusing at first but keep on tinkering with it and try to use google too in the process

IT'S ALL ABOUT QUALITY

QUALITY! QUALITY! QUALITY! QUALITY! QUALITY!

There is a reason why I typed QUALITY 10,000 times, it should be up to ten thousand, it's not , okay, let's assume it's ten thousand. UTOPIAN's watch is QUALITY. i don't know if that is written on their website or prospectus or any form of brochure but it's written all over the foreheads of the moderators. If you are not used to QUALITY, then you are not UTOPAIN, being UTOPIAN is not about being on utopian.io, it's about being all I've said, being passionate about open source in a very qualitative way.

ASK FOR HELP

The mods are really helpful. I mean really helpful. First of all, you need to be on discord, join their server and try to speak to a mod anytime you have a problem and trust me, they will be there to provide answers to your every query and give you in-depth suggestions on how you can be contribute successfully on utopian.io. Try to remember that they are always busy. The ones I know are @mkt @dutch @mooncryption @codingdefined and many more. The first day I joined discord , I had an issue with submission, it was really bad, I just contacted someone from the online user section and he helped in a way I considered too nice. Guess what, he was a mod. I really don't know what @elears is doing to them but they are awesome.

BE EXPLICIT

I have posted cool stuffs that almost got rejected reason, being that I wasn't professional and explicit enough in explaining what my contribution. Nevertheless, I got forgiven for that, but you might never always get that forgiveness because your inability to be explicit makes their job really hard as they have to proofread a lot of contributions. Spending more time on your own contribution because you were not explicit enough makes you a source of headache. More so, now that they templates for each contribution type, I strongly suggest you stick to it.

Read other People's Contribution

Reading other people's contribution will help you know a lot about the requirements of contibuting on utopian. By the way, if you are truly passionate about open source, you would defintely want to do this and even comment on cool stuffs.

They want long term Impact Contributions

I think they were a little bit lenient on this in the time past, but now , you really have to do stuffs that has a long time value. Something that will not just be of value for now but for the future. This is highly important to them, and your post could get rejected for this singular purpose no matter how good it is.

Read the rules always

There is a rule for every contribution type, reading these rules all the time helps you avoid pitfalls. The rules get updated from time to time, so it is always better to keep abreast of the rules to avoid rejected posts. I don't like being rejected , I guess you don't like that too. So just read the rules before every post.

HIDDEN RULES

There are times when your posts could get rejected for rules that are not explicitly stated, nevertheless, I think all the hidden rules are all about quality. I call them hidden rules because some of them are not stated directly but then that is the reason for this post. As long as a contribution is of HIGH QUALITY and LONG TERM IMPACT , then you should be safe.

LENGTH

I think UTOPIAN attaches some sense of quality with the length of your post, so I suggest you keep this at the back of your mind. I am not saying that your post will get rejected when it is short , I am only saying there is a higher possibility of that happening. I wouldn't blame them for that, more information are better dissipated through lengthier posts and I guess that is the more reason why you get a popup that cautions you against the length of your post when you post short contributions.

PICK YOUR NICHE

What I am saying is that you should contribute only the stuffs you are good at, so you could supply good qualitative posts, that is why I stuck with PHP in my posts. It helped me to improve with my coding skills , it also afforded me the opportunity to be more prolific with my contributions. So I suggest you pick what you are good at, that will save you a lot of future rejections. By the way, it will help you gain recommendations, as the mods are appreciative of your posts when it is impact-ful and of high quality.

With this, i think if you wanna join utopian, the path should be less bumpy as I have covered most of the prevailing causes of pitfalls on contributing via UTOPIAN.

Sort:

Wow, now I know why my last contribution was rejected. The project was explicit and of good quality but the problem is it was not open source from the beginning and there was no development history on github.

Your post is very explicit in details, we need people like you and utopian needs you too.

I think you consider becoming a moderator on utopian @akintunde.

Great post.i will surely take notes
