Small talks are not cheap

in #busy8 years ago

Another rainy day keeps me indoors with some free thoughts, about three books started and left aside for some days and ten fingers to dance on the laptop's keyboard on an open Steemit page. The perfect conditions for a short freewrite on small talks. Why small talks?

Because according to a study made by some British anthropologist named Kate Fox, 9 out of 10 people begin their small talks with discussing the weather. So, it was the weather that got my doing almost nothing inside the house and make my introduction of the article. One that has some gem in it disguised as being cheap and is called small talks.

Yes, in the opinion of "the wise" these kind of talks are useless and considered just time eaters that kill productivity and keep the speakers on a mediocre level of consciousness and interaction. That couldn't be more wrong and inaccurate. In fact the ones knowing how to master such talks are some good achievers and masters of persuasion .

The first example that comes to my mind is one from the psychology class from college. It was on something about how to trick someone to loan you some money if you doubt that he/she is not going to do that when asked directly. So you get him/her into a small talk. By doing that you actually create a warm environment where the other feels comfortable and open.

Then gradually you lead the discussion to your spot. That loan that is burning your wallet and you really need. Beginning with a small talk there's much more chances that you will succeed on getting that loan than going straightforward. Same technique works when you don't want to do a task and you wish to trick someone else in doing it. Seems that I'm all about tricking and manipulating from the rainy weather.

As cheap as there might seem, but small talks can lead to beautiful relationships or marriage in some cases and it could start also from the most talked about subject, the weather. One that is probably right now by about 38% of the world population, according to the British anthropologist mentioned in the introduction. You have to start a conversation somehow if you don't want to be too intrusive and weather might be the case and a door opener for a future relationship.

It doesn't have to be something planned as in the case of asking for a loan, but these kind of cheap talks can become some business ideas or partnerships also. Probably not around "weather predictions", but I'm sure you got the point. I remember in many small talks finding working opportunities or some kind of "quick earnings" when paying attention to the talk. Even the crypto world was brought to me by a friend during a small talk.

Related to the Steem platform there are probably hundreds of great articles that got their subject from a small talk from the comments section. I remember a couple of these situations when exchanging comments with @fullcoverbetting on different topics. It was small talks that lead to a whole blog post that got even more interaction.

Examples could go on beyond the trending page, but the point of such small talks is already made, I guess. And rain is over also, so I can get outside for some small talks. Who knows what their outcome will be? On a serious tone they're not to be overlooked though if you know how to use them as an entrance into the bigger picture. It just takes time to master them.
