in #busy7 years ago

League of Legends is currently the most played game in the world. Recently the data shows that there are 100 million active players monthly. Since the creation of professional competition leagues the game and its community have grown year after year. But more than data, let's focus on explaining what League of Legends is and why it likes and excites so many people around the world.

The competition

Most of us have dreamed of playing football professionally when we were young, being famous for your work or maybe being able to live doing what you like. The competition in League of Legends is taking very high standards, young people today tirelessly train to become a professional eSports player, the new dream is here.

The league has six divisions, Challenger being the highest category and Bronze the lowest. In each division players face opponents of the same level and, as they win, they climb positions, being paired against stronger opponents.

Climbing the division is extremely difficult as it scales on the board, which makes the game very competitive. Most of the professional players are in Challenger, but there are many amateur players trying to reach that division day after day and to recognize their work.

The game

Combining strategic thinking, quick reflexes and team play, the objective of the game, and what determines the winner, is to destroy the base of the rival team.

In League of Legends there are several game modes, the most popular being "The Summoner's Crevice", a battle that faces two teams of five players. It is the most frequented map because it is considered the standard in the competitive game and the only one where you can play qualifying games, in which the result affects the score in the league.

Before starting the game, the player must choose a character or "champion" from the wide variety available. Each one has unique abilities and a different purpose.

Each team starts the game in its respective area of the map, within its base, located both diametrically opposite. Inside the base is the Nexus, a structure that when knocked down ends the game and is protected by a large number of automatic turrets. From the Nexus, waves of subjects appear every 30 seconds, which are directed through the lanes towards the opposite base.

The players have a wide range of items that can be purchased with fictional money obtained in game, which cause the champion to inflict more damage or be more resistant. The money is obtained with the destruction of turrets, enemy subjects, neutral monsters and champions. At the same time, experience is gained, which helps raise levels and improve skills.

Each champion has 4 skills and none equals another. With more than 130 characters, there are around 520 unique abilities. Each of them is identified with its respective key (Q, W, E or R). The fourth skill, the R, is called "Ultimate", it is the most important and it requires a lot of time to be able to be used again.

All matches start on equal terms, with all players with the same amount of gold and initial experience. Victory is completely determined by the ability of the participants.

The professional scene

Since the creation of the game, Riot Games, the creative company, has acted as a kind of federation, regulating both the rules of the game and the competition, organizing tournaments and creating a structure of professional leagues. In turn, Riot has also played a key role in the dissemination of these competitions.

Currently there are five major international leagues at the highest level that are followed by millions of spectators.

Europe | EU LCS: European League of Legends Championship Series
North America | NA LCS: North American League of Legends Championship Series
Korea | LCK: League of Legends Champions Korea
China | LPL: Tencent LoL Pro League
Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao | LMS: League of Legends Master Series

Apart from these, we have other important regional competitions, such as the Russian, Turkish, Brazilian, Australian, Japanese and Latin American leagues. In Spain we also have our own league, of a lower level, since it could be considered something similar to a third European division, is the Orange Super League.

The main tournament is the World Cup, held every year and to which the best teams in each league are classified. It is celebrated throughout a month and a prize of 1 million dollars for the champion is disputed. Anyway, money is what matters least, players already have high salaries, in the cases of Chinese and American teams there are already players with millionaire salaries.

Many players have gone through great difficulties to get where they are now. Being a professional League of Legends player is not easy at all, it requires great talent, dedication and commitment. Socially it is still not an entirely accepted activity, many parents do not support their children when they want to dedicate themselves to this, which makes it even more difficult to achieve the goal of reaching the top.
