Choosing a Mentor

When choosing a mentor, one needs to first determine what qualities they wish to emulate. There are of course strengths and weakness about each of us that we need to consider as well as those of the person in which we wish to model ourselves after. As I personally resonate with the ambitious; I chose Sheryl Sandberg COO of Facebook as the woman in which I would most like to be like. That is not to say that I think that she is perfect, or that I particularly align with her politics. I don't even have to necessarily like her business practices or the company she works for. What I do like about her is that she is ranked 5th by Forbes as the most influential woman on the planet and that she is worth over 1.5 billion dollars. The fact that she has risen so far in a mans world has given me great hope that one day gender discrimination for all of us will become a thing of the past. It's not so far fetched as it seems. I believe that in the future people from every point on the gender spectrum will take up leadership positions in every aspect of society around the world. I believe in the inherent goodness and positivity of humanity despite the apparent dystopic path in which we appear to be headed towards. I know that we all are at our core selfish and that is why I know that we will make it as a species, because we are not as stupid as we appear to be on the surface, and social evolution towards a positive outcome is in all of our best interest.
The same positive outcome can be said for the future trend of transgender acceptance in the marketplace. Money talks and more and more people are coming out of the proverbial closet everyday. We want to buy things! The marketplace will have to adapt to the changing taste and styles of this emerging clientele if it hopes to stay in business. This is further support of the fact that people will act in accordance with what is in their best interest or else face the dire consequences of being unable to adapt to an evolving social dynamic. People tend to fear change and that is understandably built into our DNA. Change is good for all of us and this is an exciting time to be alive. What it really comes down to is training our minds to think positively about ourselves and the people around us. We need to learn to see opportunity in the midst of disparity. We need to remind ourselves that we all all in this together. We need to learn how to learn from others.
