Dirty Money: Price Gouging The Cost of Medications

Last night on Netflix I watched a show called Dirty Money, Episode 3: Drug Short. This episode is about Pharmaceutical companies price gouging the cost of Medications.

Price Gouging refers to the practice of raising the price of goods, services, or commodities, to an unreasonable or unfair level.

Price gouging in the United States by Pharmaceutical companies is becoming a more and more frequent problem and remains largely unbeknownst to most people. In August of 2016, Valeant Pharmaceuticals was sued for price gouging which became the first litigation to shed light on the greedy tactics Pharmaceutical companies are using to increase profits for their companies. In essence, Valeant and Turing pharmaceuticals bought monopoly positions, through merger and acquisitions, in old drugs that faced no direct competition in the United States and raised prices aggressively.

While the Netflix show Dirty Money does a great job at explaining the tactics used by Valeant Pharmaceuticals to raise the price of its drugs, and raises awareness of an ever increasingly prevalent issue. This problem, does not stop with Valeant Pharmaceuticals. In fact, many pharmaceutical companies are doing the very same thing, which can be seen in the picture below to highlight only but a few.

Price Gouging.jpg

EpiPen is an injection that contains a drug called epinephrine which narrows blood vessels and opens airways in the lungs and is used to treat severe life threatening allergic reactions.

In the hospital today during rounds, a young girl was admitted due to an anaphylaxis reaction (a severe allergic reaction) to something she ate. When mom was asked if she had given her daughter the EpiPen, she responded saying she was hesitant because of the cost of the medication. As you can see from the chart below, this life-saving medication has been subject to egregious price gouging over the past couple of years!

Unfortunately these tactics by pharmaceutical companies have become more of the norm rather than the exception. Numerous other medications currently on the market have also been subject to the same unjust price hikes. Thus, hopefully by raising awareness of this issue will solutions then be set in place to regulate these unjust price hikes that are ultimately passed onto patients themselves.

Sort:

On one hand, I understand that sometimes drugs are very expensive because development costs or so high. But buying the rights to existing drugs and jacking up the prices is horrible. Perhaps a change to IP laws are necessary in terms of how long patents are good for, particularly when drug patents change hands...

I agree its based purely on greed and is unethical for patients to say the least. Unfortunately since pharmaceutical companies are "purchasing" the exclusive rights to a drug and are the only manufactures then they can charge whatever they want as the price the way the current law sits. For instance, even after all the litigation and lawsuits, the price of daraprim (the drug Valeant came under fire for price gouging) is still $20,000

Epinephrine, is there any other reason then price-fixing, that it is pricey? These stories makes me so disappointed...

To be honest, no. The pharmaceutical companies claim some expenses are for research and development and they offer patient assistance programs. However, this is BS as their research and development spending continues to decline each year and the patient assistance programs are complicated by prior authorizations making access to these drugs extremely difficult if insurance companies don't pay flat out for these ridiculous prices.

Maybe we can disrupt that corruption with the blockchain somehow?
Or some other tech... I am not against capitalism, but when it comes to just jacking up prices on meds that people and sick children really need, just because they can, I get pissed.

I agree @friendly-fenix and that could very much be, I know medibloc, medishares and medicalchain are in that space now just to name a few off hand. So hopefully some changes will be made sooner rather than later but it all starts with awareness

Yeah, it is sad, that these things are accepted and allowed. Lets hope these projects "medibloc, medishares and medicalchain" can help improve the situation for humanity.

The dark side of the pharmaceutical industry many drugs are unfortunately hiked up. This industry is a business . I reseteemed this post , this article deserve more attention.🚀

Thank you! I greatly appreciate it. After speaking with that little girls family today I decided enough was enough. Trying to do my part to spread awareness about the issue at hand.

You seem like a good person @tspink which makes your attitude towards the theft of Superior Coin all the more strange. All I am looking for is return of my database and my social network code, my $2 million and my 260 million Superior Coins. Not so much to ask for please help make it happen

It's really sad that so many people turn a blind eye to these kinds of manipulations. And I'm sure Pharmaceuticals isn't the only sector that this stuff happens in.

That’s probably unfortunately true. I’m not sure about other industries but I know pharma is the biggest lobbying group in terms of politics which probably aids to the whole turning a blind eye idea

thanks for this very helpful post...thanks for sharing

very nice article

Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read it :)

I've been watching this issue a bit. Aside from the issue of cost, apparently a lot of these drugs are cut into weaker doses overseas before the price gouging happens. It's a sad issue in all aspects.

@fitinfun That is really sad to hear...

That's true. I know a couple of manufacturing facilities have been suspended for doing this which also contributes to the drug shortage problem overall as well.
