Why Small Businesses Are So Important

in #business6 years ago

Small businesses play a very important role in economic growth and while they might not generate as much money as larger corporations, a country would not be able to function efficiently without them. With inflation and overpopulation on the rise, starting a business is one of the very few ways that people still stand a chance of building a comfortable and sustainable living, making them a crucial component to not only economic sectors but for personal well-being too.

What classifies a business as a “small business”?

  • Small businesses are privately owned.
  • They have less than 500 employees.
  • Annual sales are significantly lower than larger corporate companies.

The importance of small businesses is growing by the day and continues to add much value to a country’s worth, for instance, they:

  1. Increase job opportunities as well offer a new variety of career options;
  2. Encourage community support;
  3. Promote competition and help avoid exploitation of product prices and service fees;
  4. Are more flexible and can adapt to the demands of consumers more easily than corporate companies;
  5. Encourage creativity and usually introduce new inventions to the market – a proud feat for a developing country.

In most countries, about 60% of Gross Domestic Product is contributed by small businesses, if these businesses had to stop running, it wouldn’t be wrong to predict that the countries would be left in quite a fragile economic state, which almost makes small businesses more powerful than their corporate counterparts.

These small businesses also encourage populations to remain in their local environments, since the scope of products, services, and entertainment is much wider, leaving enough resources for individuals and families to remain satisfied with their immediate surroundings.

Last but not least, small businesses do not always stay small, in fact, this is how large corporations start. Small companies that are managed well and are marketed successfully have huge potential to grow into larger companies that are of greater economical worth. These large businesses then often remain in the community where they were originally established where they continue to provide job opportunities and wealth to their community.

When you undertake small businesses with such beautiful and insightful ideas up there, it not only serve as an alternative source of income but also a means to create jobs for people out there. With my experience over the few years as a serial entrepreneur through my NGO, I have helped create many jobs through TRAINING, FUNDING, MENTORING AND ADVOCACY which in return, the ripple effect has become so incredible especially in the Nigeria-African society. It is only by creating and empowering small businesses a sustainable development goals can be attained in any given economy. This post is sure a solution to lifting the status quo of smaller businesses in my own candid opinion. Good job author.
