It is All About the Process

in #business6 years ago

We are so keen to reach our goals that we often get frustrated. We feel tired. We start to explore what 'hacks' might be out there to help us find a short-cut to the end result. Everyone else seems to be getting ahead, apart from us. Our goals and objectives still look and feel a million miles off.

Flip to the other side, there sit the 'lucky few' who have made it. They managed to reach their goals. They succeeded. It might be the successful sale of a business that they had spent years building up or the completion of an epic sporting challenge or whatever other lofty goals that had set out to achieve.

In almost every case for those ' winners', after revelling in the glow of success for a while, they are now starting to feel a little empty inside. Feeling a little bit lost. Lacking a sense of direction. Lacking a challenge.

You see from all of the successful entrepreneurs that I have been lucky enough to have met and worked with, the thrill for them is in the building of the business, project or higher goal. It is the doing. The grind. The Process. It is this that is most important and provides the most personal fulfilment.
Yet most folk who have yet to 'make it' are desperate to get to the finish line. To reach the end goal. And to get 'The Process' of getting there over as soon as possible. Like the grass will be greener. And if they feel like it is too hard a challenge, they are quick to find an easier cart to push. Often quitting and starting again. On something else. Falling farther behind.

What is being missed time and time again is that the process of seeking to achieve your goals is the ultimate reward. It is the opportunity to get up each morning and do the work to edge closer to your goals. To feel the thrill of the ups and downs. This is what matters.

After all, if you succeed and achieve your goals, it will typically be a matter of weeks before you're itching to go again and seek to climb and conquer your next mountain.

Entrepreneurs seem to be hard-wired to be magnetised to the process.

This is a really important message that I think falls on many deaf ears when it comes to entrepreneurship.

Heck even in my situation, and I'm 20 years into online business, I'm always looking for short cuts instead of trusting the process and learning from the journey.

Hard sell....Wait, play your cards right and keep growing.....People want 'instant' instead of the grind and hustle.

Yes, I think we all feel it. The drive to find a quicker way. But this is actually the best bit. The doing. The process.

I'll never forget a partner at an accountancy partner at a firm that I used to work at standing up to give his retirement speech. He said that he envied us young partners having the journey ahead of us. Within weeks of retiring, he died. He was right. Its the journey that fuels us.

This fits most aspects of life today - at least in American culture. We tend to want everything now, new cars, expensive trips, bigger houses. No one wants to go through the journey others have traveled to get to that place. Focus too much on the end goal and miss the whole trip there.

Reminds me of a few hikes I have done where we have really pushed the pace, missed a ton of beauty so we could get to more "destinations", the time missing some of the best views.

So true, we just need to slow down and enjoy the ride!
