나의 롤모델이 되어준 뷰티계의 거물 토니 고

오늘부터 세계속에서 한국을 빛내고 있는 분들 중 우리에게 자긍심과 자극제가 되어주는 분들을 한분씩 소개해드리려고 합니다. 제가 첫번째로 소개시켜드리고 싶은 분은 토니 고 라는 여성 사업가 입니다. 그녀는 미국에서 성공한 코스메틱 브랜드 NYX Cosmetic 닉스 코스메틱의 창업주 입니다. 성공시킨 닉스를 5억불이라는 엄청난 금액에 로레알에 매수를 하고 지금은 새롭게 선글라스 브랜드 퍼버스를 시작하였습니다. 그녀는 2016년 포브스의 미국에서 자수성가한 여성 부자(America’s Richest Self-Made Women)순위에서 57위를 차지하기도 했습니다.

토니는 초등학교를 마치고 곧바로 미국으로 이민을 가게 됩니다. 미국에 갔을때만해도 영어를 한마디도 못해 어려움이 많았다고 합니다. 토니의 어머니는 LA다운타운에서 향수와 화장품 도매업을 하셨는데, 주말과 방학에는 보수없이 어머니를 늘 도왔습니다.

화장품에 대한 열정이 남달랐던 토니는 10대때부터 늘 학교에 화장품을 챙겨갔다고 합니다. 어머니께서 화장을 못하게 했기 때문에 학교에 가자마자 화장을 하고, 집에 돌아오기전에는 비누로 세수를 해야 했습니다. 점심을 굶은 돈으로는 항상 립스틱을 샀는데, 값비싼 화장품을 살 형편이 안됐던 그녀는 늘 드럭스토어에서 저렴한 제품을 구입해야 했습니다. 하지만 그당시까지만해도 드럭스토어의 제품들은 그리 만족스러운 퀄리티가 아니였다고 합니다.

"빨간색 립스틱은 밝고 생기 있는 톤이 아니었고, 파란색 아이섀도는 원하는 색이 나오질 않았어요."

백화점에서 값비싼 화장품을 구경하는것을 좋아했던 토니는 이 둘의 갭을 줄일수는 없을까? 정말 좋은 제품을 좋은 가격에 제공할수 있는 기회는 없을까 생각하게 됩니다. 그리고는 닉스를 시작하기로 결심을 하게 되었죠. 토니는 1999년 25세에 부모님에게 빌린 25만달러로 화장품 사업에 뛰어듭니다.

첫번째 제품은 펜슬제품이었습니다. 이 한 제품을 가지고 정말 빠듯하게 혼자서 일을 했는데요, 그녀가 곧 대표이자 CEO, 리셉셔니스트이자 비서였습니다. 하지만 그뒤 언어가 생각보다 큰 장벽으로 다가왔다고 합니다.

"잘한다고 생각했던 영어가 사업을 하면서 한계에 부닥쳤어요. 언어는 문화에요. 미국에 갔지만 한국 드라마 보고, 한국 책을 보고, 한국 음식을 먹었죠. 몸은 미국에 있는데 한국 문화에 젖어 있었던 거죠. 그런데 비즈니스를 하려면 일단 미국 사람이랑 친해져야 하거든요. 저는 그 선을 넘지 못했던 거죠. 몇 마디 하다보면 할 얘기가 없는 거에요. 그래서 사는 방식을 완전히 바꿨어요."

그 뒤로 한국 드라마 시청을 중단하고 밤마다 영어 동화책을 큰소리로 읽으며 발음 교정에 나섰습니다. 이후로 빠르게 성장한 닉스는 로레알에 회사를 넘기기 전에는 250명정도의 직원이 있었다고 합니다. 20대의 어린나이에 한 기업의 사장이 된 토니는 여성사업가로서 사업을 운영하는것이 어렵지 않았을까요? 이 질문에 토니는 이렇게 대답했습니다.

"별로 그렇지 않았어요. 저는 제가 남자의 세상속에 있다고 생각하지 않았어요. 내 세상에 남자들이 있었던거죠. 저희 어머니도 일하는 여성이였고, 여성이 일을하는것은 저에게 너무도 자연스러운 일이였습니다. 여성은 훨씬 더 공감을 잘합니다. 그리고 좋은 직감을 가지고 있죠. 이 점은 좋은 리더가 되기위한 조건이이기도 하죠. 여성사업가로 있다는건 정말 환상적이에요."

그녀는 처음엔 은퇴하기 위해 회사를 팔았다고 합니다.

15년동안 회사를 운영했고, 이제 해변에 누워 마가리타를 마시고 인생을 즐기고 싶었어요. 제가 회사를 판 다음날 샴페인을 터트릴줄 알았죠. 하지만 3개월동안 저는 정말 우울한 시간을 보냈어요. 그 이후로 비지니스 카테고리를 찾아보기 시작했고, 닉스를 판지 정확히 12개월 후 저는 새로운 비지니스를 시작했습니다.

한국에서의 인지도는 아직 낮지만 제가 토니 고를 알게 된건 2010년경 입니다. 한국엔 없었던 닉스 코스메틱을 일본에서 처음 발견하고는 이 멋있는 브랜드의 창업가는 누구일까? 하는 생각에 찾아봤는데, 여성 그것도 한국인이라는 사실에 정말 놀라웠습니다. 그 뒤로 저는 토니의 팬이 되었고 토니는 저의 롤모델이 되어주었어요. 그녀의 열정 그리고 끊임없는 도전정신을 닮고 싶습니다. 여러분들도 롤모델이 있으신가요? 롤모델이 있다는건 참 좋은거 같아요. 끝까지 읽어주셔서 정말 감사합니다.

Toni Ko, one of the 60 America’s Richest Self-Made Women in 2016

I would like to introduce to you one of the people who are Korean in the world give us pride and stimulation, From today. For the first time, I would like to introduce Tony Ko a female business women. She is a founder of successful cosmetic brand in the United States called NYX Cosmetic. She sold her company to L'Oreal with almost 500million dollars, and now she started her new Sunglasses brand called ‘Perverse Sunglasses’. She also ranked #57 in the Forbes of the America's Richest Self-Made Women.

Tony immigrates to the US immediately after finishing her elementary school. When she went to America, she couldn’t speak a word in English. Tony's mother was a perfume and cosmetics wholesaler in downtown Los Angeles, and Toni always helped her mother’s business on weekends and holidays without pay.

Tony, always passionate about cosmetics. When she was teenager, her mother did not allow me to put makeup on, so she had to make up as soon as she’s got to school and wash her face with soap before going home. She often skipped lunch and bought lipsticks. But she had to buy affordable products at the drugstore because she could not afford expensive cosmetics. At that time, the products of the drugstore were not so high quality.

"The red lipstick was not a bright and lively tone, and the blue eye shadow did not produce the desired color."

When she went to department stores for test expensive cosmetics she thought how can I reduce the gap between the expensive brand’s quality and drug store’s price? In 1999, Tony jumped into the cosmetics business with a $ 250,000 loan from her parents at age 25.

The first product was cosmetic pencil. She worked alone very hard with this one product, and she was CEO, receptionist and secretary at the same time. But after that, the language came to be a bigger problem than she thought.

I went to the US but I watched Korean drama, watched Korean books, and ate Korean food but my body was in the United States and I was in Korean culture.
If you want to be a business man you have to get close to American. But I couldn’t have to go through that line, because I didn’t have anything to say in a few words, so I have completely changed the way I live. "

After that, she stopped watching Korean dramas and read the English fairytales loudly every night.

NYX cosmetic grow really fast. And NYX have had about 250 employees before sold the company to L'Oreal. Tony, who became a president of a company in her early 20s, was that difficult to run a business as a woman? Tony answered like this.

"Not really, I never consider myself to be a female in man’s world it’s always my world man are in it. I grew up in an environment a lot of women were working. My mother was a working mother. So it was very natural to me that I working. Women are really compassionate and also we have intuition, as we know being a compassionate and have intuition is a great part of being a leader. For those reasons fantastic being a female entrepreneur."

When she was sold her company she wanted to retired .

I ran the company for 15 years and now I want to drink margaritas lie down on the beach, enjoy my life. The very next day after I sold the company I thought I was going to go and have champagne. But I had a really depressed time for three months. So I started looking for business categories, and exactly 12 months later, I started a new business.

I’ve been known her almost 7years now. I found this NYX cosmetic brand in Tokyo when I was in Japan. And thought who is the founder of this coolest brand I’ve ever seen. I started to look for online and I was so surprised that the founder was a women and she was Korean. After that day I became a big fan of Tony and Tony became my role model. I want to resemble her passion and constant challenge spirit. I want to ask you if you have a role model? I think it's really good to have a role model. She always inspiring me and I’m so proud of her as a women and Korean.
