Reliability and Responsibility: The Lost Art of Business
I do paid work and Pro Bono work. I run events, and help others produce and promote live events as well. I have done this for the majority of my life, and have booked all kinds of services. I've been involved in throwing parties for 10 people and 10,000+ people. Until recently I have never seen such a lack of professionalism and utter lack of respect from contractors and vendors.
What happened to the days when people showed up on time, ready to do what was needed? What happened to the times of people actually caring about the task they are supposed to be carrying out? Am I wrong for thinking that if you commit to doing something you should do it to the best of your ability? If you are getting paid for that commitment, then you should be even more on point, as that means your monetized services are in demand. Don't you think in order to keep them in demand you should actually carry out what you were hired to do, especially if its time sensitive? Why do so many people feel entitled to walk all over others, and not render services, or show up prepared to do so, then blame the person who hired them and try to demand money?
This isn't just a criticism of one company, person, or organization, this is a general criticism of the lack of professionalism and business ethics in the world today. Not only is this frustrating for the people hiring these businesses, its also frustrating for employees, guests, and others who are affected by their bad business practices. Not to mention the lack of consideration it shows your industry, as if you are not prepared to step up to the plate someone else will be.
Some advice:
Show up on time.
Have all the products and/or equipment you need to operate your business.
If you do show up late, be humble.
If you do not fulfill your contract written or verbal, you have no right to demand payment.
