Natural Capital - 1 of 3 in a series on the Capitals
As promised in my last post, I'm going to lightly unpack the Six Capitals so that some members of the Steem community who might not be familiar with Integrated Reporting get some insight into this approach to corporate governance.
Here's another depiction of the Capitals, showing (only a little better) how they inter-relate:
Google Natural Capital, and you’ll find a plethora of perspectives on its definition. I’ve found this one, from the World Forum on Natural Capital (WFNC), particularly straightforward:
“Natural Capital can be defined as the world’s stocks of natural assets which include geology, soil, air, water and all living things.”
The WFNC elaborates on this definition – “It is from this Natural Capital that humans derive a wide range of services, often called ecosystem services, which make human life possible. The most obvious ecosystem services include the food we eat, the water we drink and the plant materials we use for fuel, building materials and medicines. There are also many less visible ecosystem services such as the climate regulation and natural flood defences provided by forests, the billions of tonnes of carbon stored by peatlands, or the pollination of crops by insects. Even less visible are cultural ecosystem services such as the inspiration we take from wildlife and the natural environment.”
What I like about this discussion of Natural Capital is the introduction of systemic thinking, and consideration of the connectivity of systems to drive (or destroy) sustainability.
How can the introduction of a cryptocurrency like Steemit drive our ability to make business decisions more systemically? Will it give us an ability to “see” more systemically once the Ledger of Everything is more visible to the World of Everyone?
It is so important to think of every decision, every business in a holistic way - everything you do has knock-on effects - think about buying a wooden salad bowl from a supermarket vs buying it from a street vendor... drastic knock-on effects and implications to the world around you...
