A Proposal: Steemit & The Electronic Dance Music Scene (Making my music event company a part of the Steemit community)
Hi everyone! I'm excited. Today, I'm presenting a case for using Steemit as a supporting organization for my music event company. The goal is to have a pool of talents all over the world building businesses together. We think this is a particularly sweet deal if you look at Steemit as an open-freelance platform. Anyone can contribute freely to any initiatives within the Steemit network, regardless of experience and without restrictions. We think that's a great way forward for startups to be agile and cost-efficient.
So what's in return for Steemit? Exposure, new sign-ups, shared resources, and a new ally for world domination.
What are my motivations for writing this proposal?
Consider a decentralized autonomous organization like Ethereum's the DAO. It is a heavily formalized, even codified arrangement. Proposals are technical in nature and requires plenty of inspection, only allowing for certain types of projects and contractors to be included in the mix. What if we remove those heavy formalizations that usually get in the way of community participation?
A more fluid, social DAO should revolve around reputation and goodwill. We can speed things up and promote more inclusion by removing promises of profit-sharing, and eliminating calculated requests for funding (as attempted in the DAO).
This is actually not much of a proposal. It is already a plan in motion. Just goes to show that Steemit is an enabling-technology.
Why Steemit?
We believe Steemit can be used in creative ways to support entrepreneurs, and for our case, includes:-
- Support from the community means we may be able to lower some overhead, moreso than any rigid organization could. The diverse Steemit community may participate freely in parts of our business. Better marketing, better branding, better website security, better business practices, better legal advice. You name it.
- We want to stay true to bootstrapping and sailing our ship without big money interest. We're open-sourcing the business, in a way so anyone can replicate what we are doing here. I've expressed this in a post before: https://steemit.com/showerthoughts/@kevinwong/open-source-everything-and-earn-steem
- Steemit may also prove to be a platform for music enthusiasts to interact in meaningful ways. Especially for the prosumers. It is well known in the music industry there isn't any good way for music producers to build content with the community. It is usually a divided process. As we can see here on Steemit, creator-consumer interaction is already showing positive signs of progress.
Why Hybrid Entertainment?
As a company trying to be porous in search of new ways to broaden our horizon, we're extending ourselves to the Steemit community. Here are some of our little innovations and aspirations:-
- Ticketing system built-in to our website. Perhaps we can add cryptocurrencies as a payment next time, maybe even replacing the 3rd party whitelabel ticketing system into something that is without a middleman.
- Event insurance. There has been many cases of loss due to sudden event cancellations. Mostly arising out of governmental directives. We have formulated an insurance with a third party, designed specifically to mitigate such risks. Perhaps we can drop this altogether with some decentralized insurance plan in the future.
- Bringing safety and convenience for our customers. We have partnered up with Uber for exclusive rides and rider concentration around our event during the night. And who knows, we may even try out some form of decentralized Uber next?
- We're passionate in bringing together all sorts of talents for our music events. And not just confined to music. To play it safe for the first year, we are hiring mainstream DJs from the Top 100 list. Personally, I would love to enable "prosumers" from all around the world to plan events together. I wrote about a growing music trend here (https://steemit.com/vaporwave/@kevinwong/the-rise-of-vaporwave-and-new-age-aesthetics).There will be enormous reach from empowering this growing movement.
Why Dance Music?
Other than being our passion, we see plenty of potential pulling the non-crypto crowd. We can definitely use more diversity on Steemit. The electronic dance music crowd are broadly social, highly networked, and gender balanced. It is also a growing trend all around the world. Music is emotive, and it connects people all around the world.
Red Bull is also a great supporter of music, especially within underground circuit and we wish to work with them in the future. Right now we're still trying to come up with ways to make Steemit a natural adoption as a social, story-sharing platform.
Other organizations may even follow suit. Steemit's possibilities are endless.
Plus, creators and prosumers are always looking out for different avenues to be self-sustaining.
So, what's the plan?
We have paid for all the costs of hiring DJs and event planning in its entirety. The cost of our debut event alone has amounted up to USD 15,000 (mainly from crypto earnings). So far, our sales have reached near breakeven point.
The music festival will be held in Soju Sunway, which used to be Ministry of Sound. An acoustic dome made for next-level music experience.
If you're in Malaysia on 5th August, drop by and let's party!
As a way to give back to the community, we will be continuously running Facebook ads for our current and future music events which includes shoutouts for Steemit. Plus, we will make it a point to educate our audience about the use and potentials for Steemit.
You can say that I've made my company Steemit's ambassador. Self-appointed, but it would be awesome to have the community's support. And we want to be open enough to enable outside participation in our company. The hope is for continuous brand awareness and mainstream adoption for Steemit.
Other than that, we will be releasing all future event photos and design materials for the community to use in any way they see fit.
So here's the poster, it's already up on our website and Facebook page:-
Closing words
It is our deliberate plan to run our first few events based on mainstream popularity to mitigate risks of low-turnouts. Our long-term game is to enable enthusiasts around the world to be able to bootstrap their own events with ease, and with the help of diverse personalities in the Steemit community.
This should lower down plenty of costs as we figure out best practices, especially with the help of a larger brainmass. Everyone benefits from helping each other out.
The roadmap ahead doesn't just end with music events, but also music applications.
What's also important is to be able to use Steemit to transform hard-edged competition into collaboration amongst businesses in the same playing field. At the time of writing, a local club behemoth in Kuala Lumpur has thrown its entire weight into competing with our festival on the same date. A David vs. Goliath situation. Well it's more like us competing with them. The folks at Zouk Kuala Lumpur are always at the top of their game! That'll be a story for another time.
Thinking about it, Steemit is like an open, social form of the DAO. A place where anyone within the ecosystem can participate and contribute in any businesses. Special thanks to @dan and @ned for making this wonderful social-sharing platform.
The plan is simple: continuously provide exposure for Steemit and release our methods, collaterals, and findings to benefit the community. It takes two to tango. With Steemit, two-way contributions can freeflow between business entities and the community.
Would love to have any of your feedback and whatever you have in mind.

Thanks for your support @anwenbaumeister! What kind of music are you into when it comes to festivals?
At festivals I personally like multiple stages that have very different feels so I can bounce between them depending on my mood! Some types include moombahton, psytrance, hardcore/gabber, huge drum and bass fan at festivals, and classic dubstep :-)
I met Kevin Wong on Steemit.
