Burstcoin Mining

in #burstcoin7 years ago

Like many others I am always looking for the next thing to tinker with, so on my daily interwebs journey I stumbled across Burstcoin. This is more or less meant to help anyone stuck or interested in trying this out. I know there are plenty of how-tos and helpful youtube videos, but one more can't hurt right?

Per good 'ol wikipedia Burstcoin is:

Burstcoin is a digital cryptographic currency and payment system based on the blockchain technology. Burstcoin was introduced on the bitcointalk.org forum on 10 August 2014 as an Nxt-based currency. Burstcoins are mined using an algorithm called proof-of-capacity (PoC) in which miners use computer storage instead of the more common energy-expensive method of permanent complex computational calculations.

The energy requirements for Burstcoin mining is minimal compared to most other cryptocurrencies making Burstcoin one of the most energy efficient within the field of proof based cryptocurrencies. The Nxt blockchain platform allows for development flexibility, ensuring developers freedom to create their own applications. In this sense, Burstcoin can be considered as a next-generation cryptographic application project (often called 'cryptocurrency 2.0') in contrast to the first generation cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.

It has taken about a month or so to get up to speed and understand just enough to be dangerous. I was able to get my dad to understand it and even start plotting and mining, so I think I can explain it clearly enough here as well.

Most of my links will be affiliate just as an fyi upfront. I will also include on affiliate links just in case someone has an issue with it.

Helpful Links to get started:

  • Wallet - https://www.burst-team.us/index.php/wallets/
    • The online wallet is hit or miss, so I mostly use the local wallet. I have had to clear the DB and re-download the local wallet more times than I care to admit. For being an older coin, it sure has some quirks and barriers to enter. Maybe thats one of the reasons its not a very visible coin.

In future posts I will explain nonces, staggers and plot files so you can plot your drives and start mining.

I decided against GPU plotting and went the route of a top tier CPU. I have a few reasons for this:

  1. I couldn't get my hands on GPU's for a reasonable price and I didn't want to take one from my ETH rigs.
  2. When you GPU plot, you need to go back an optimize, seemed like a waste
  3. I am able to CPU plot 12TB (3- 4tb internals) in just under 30 hours, which is plenty fast for me

Next post will be about my hardware and workflow.

Tips are always welcomed and appreciated ;)

I'm gonna try to mine it this week.
