The average man spent a quarter of his age to sleep. Different from the general belief that sleep is passive condition in which the body and the brain does not work, modern research first about sleeping by Nathaniel Kleitman and Eugene Aserinsky from the University of Chicago (1953) found that there was a phase when human eyes moving quickly in bed. Phase later called rapid-eye movement (REM) that generally occurs when people dream.

Now, research on sleep continue and add to our understanding of the relationship between sleep and health, ranging from weight problems, susceptibility to disease, learning ability, memory, mood, and others.

"Sleep is a period in which the brain is involved in a number of activities that are necessary for life, which is closely linked to quality of life," said Mark Wu MD Ph.D., a neurologist from Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), United States.

According to Wu, in addition to REM, some phases of Slow Wave Sleep (SWS). Phase is characterized by slow brain wave but a big, muscle relaxation, slow, deep breaths, which helps the body to be fresh after a long day.

Slow Wave Sleep consists of a number of stages, and each stage shows the quality of sleep. The first is a boundary situation between awake and asleep. The second is a light sleeper (body make adjustments, slowed heart rate, irregular breathing, and body temperature decreases). Third and fourth stages are sleeping in.

Wu explains that the human brain recognize the biological clock. One of the major roles of this hour is to respond to light, increasing the production of the hormone melatonin in the evening. This biological clock will stop working if exposed to light. Unable to detect and respond to light that people with total blindness often have trouble sleeping.

As hungry indicates that humans need to eat, drowsiness is the body's natural response when people need a break. Sleep less than four hours per day can increase the risk of depression and lead to suicidal thoughts. In a 2014 survey by Kangbuk Samsung Medical Center on 202 629 workers aged 20-40 years showed that among those who slept four hours or less per day, the prevalence of depression was 9.1 percent, or four times more than those who used to sleep seven hours.

John Peever , director of the Laboratory of Neurobiology University of Toronto, and Brian J. Murray, director of the sleep laboratory at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center explained that quality sleep can refresh the body's cells, allowing the brain to clean themselves by throwing garbage, develop the ability to learn and remember. Adequate sleep after studying all day is important, because in sleep the brain sort out memories which need to be stored for the long term. Sleep also played a role in mood, appetite and libido.

In the journal Sleep , in January 2017, noted that the researchers took blood samples of 11 pairs of identical twins with different sleep patterns and found that people with shorter sleep duration has an immune system that is more vulnerable than their siblings who get enough sleep.

"The immune system works best when we are getting enough sleep. Sleep seven hours is recommended for optimal health," said the study's lead author, Nathaniel Watson, co-director of the UW Medicine Sleep Center at Harborview Medical.

However, on the other hand, excessive sleep was terrible. People who sleep more than nine hours are routinely threatened with a variety of issues, ranging from a decline in cognitive function, an increased risk of dementia, to infertility.

In Indonesia, many people make the fast of Ramadan as an excuse to sleep linger.

In the book Syu'abul Faith, Imam Baihaqi narrated a hadith that reads, "Her sleep fasting person is worship, silence is prayer beads, prayer come true and deeds multiplied." Although popular, it belonged to the tradition apparently weak (da'eef). Imam Baihaqi himself says that the chains of the hadith is problematic.

"Ma'Ruf bin Hasan (one of the hadith narrators) is weak, and Sulaiman bin Amr al-Nakha'i weaker than him," he wrote.
