Curation Digest changes
As I’m sure you are all aware, @buildawhale was created by @themarkymark to fulfill two important needs of the Steemit Community; to help minnows gain visibility through the upvote-bot usage and to highlight solid, original content through the daily Curation Digest.
@buildawhale has achieved these goals in many ways. Minnows are using the upvote bot and gaining visibility through both the higher earnings of their posts and from the added bonus of being featured in the Daily Digest.
Unfortunately, @buildawhale is also being used for the shitposters and spammers. It’s making life difficult for our Curating team.
Our curators, we currently have a team of 6 including Chief Curators @nicnas and I (@bethalea), go through hundreds of URLs every day, searching for at least five good, original pieces from our fellow Steemians.
I am sorry to tell you that it’s difficult. Not that you aren’t out there, beloved Authors. The problem is that there are so many more shitposters and spammers, and everyone ends up on the same list for us to go through.
I have an idea about how to help us, help you. Yes, I know that’s a cheesy line from that movie… it also happens to be true. I can’t tell you how frustrated I have become, going through posts that are copied, plagarised or otherwise total crap, in order to find the shiny gem of originality.
I often use my 1 SBD sent to @buildawhale on a post I’ve found that I think deserves a boost of visibility and extra kudos to the author, and I have heard from others in our community who do the same.
The Curation Team at @buildawhale will be giving priority to those posts who were sent to us from someone other than the author.
It is my hope that our team will be able to feast upon more high quality content this way, and that the Steemit community will be enhanced by you, faithful reader, sending these gems our way. I call you now to support your community and authors you deem worthy by using the @buildawhale service to promote someone other than yourself.
What do you think? Do you hate this idea? If so, why? Do you love it? Again, why? Let’s start a real discussion about using our upvoting bot this way, as a vehicle to enhance our communities.

I enjoy a lot of lexiconical's writing!!
I nominate Jon Snow 1983, this post actually is a video so no reading. Sounds like a dope idea and could help people in Venezuela become part of the 21st century economy and other buzzword bullshit.

Wow... the comments on this post are Mind Blowing! I mean... Boom @themarkymark your patience with these people is exceptional. People need to read and understand the rules of the bot for crying out loud! And don't give me "tell me how it feels when you don't get a refund and if you feel the same" Heard that, and I've done that. I've been riding the line of upvoting posts in the last day so I am never too long separated from my SBD, and you know what? I sent some funds in too late and didn't get a vote. And I didn't cry about it. Because it is in the rules!
Anyway... to the point of the post.
I do think that it is a noble effort to try to curate the muck. Obviously I know where you are coming from. ;-) Knowing that this is an option, I may do it from time to time on posts that I love that, for one reason or another, don't qualify for Curie.
The problem is in the value of $1 SBD right now. People don't want to spend it on someone else if it is worth $13 USD. When you start taking that into account, it gets real expensive real fast. And curation rewards for front running the bot vote aren't going to cover that SBD.
On the other side, what if people just started cycling voting for each other instead of voting for themselves? As soon as you come up with a new policy and announce it, someone is going to figure out an exploit for it. If someone starts a second account just to send bot votes to their main account, then you have to start and maintain a blacklist for people who are trying to game the system. Too much effort for you guys again.
Can you have buildawhale self report? Set up some parameters of what sort of posts you find appealing based on word count, tags, or other measurables through SteemSql that would help narrow the field? SQL queries have been a game changer for Curie, and has made our lives so much easier. seems like you could design something that queries the database for
Upvote from: Buildawhale Post Age < 6 days, Minimum Word Count > 200 OR Minimum Image Count > 3, Vote from cheetah=false.
I don't design the queries, I just use what is provided to me, but doing something like that I am sure Marky could whip up, and that would give you a baseline. If you can't find 5 from that, then you take a deeper dive.
Just a thought.
hey @mikepm74!! I have been racking my brain to try to find a way to cull the unneccessary baloney from our lists to look at, and in actuality, had a brand new thought the moment after this post went live, lol. So I'm sure we'll see some variations of this change.
Marky is highly capable of creating the queries like you mentioned, however I felt like it was important to keep human eyes on the posts as much as possible. Word count, for instance... I've come across some amazing photography with hardly any words at all that I found moving enough to curate for the digest.
I look forward to the next evolution!
xoxo mikey ;)

yeah that is why you do an OR statement in the query, where it gives you word count OR at least X number of images. That would knock out the one line and one picture posts.
Human eyes are extremely important, otherwise curation wouldn't really be curation. It's just creating the tools that get rid of the stuff you know you weren't going to select anyway.
I'm sure you will come up with something great!
@buildawhale Dude I didn't receive the Upvote for my 2 Sbds on this post.

Couldnt delete my comment, but this is just to confirm, yeah I received your Upvote.
Thanks
thanks for updating. The windows are 2 hours 40 minutes and even once the bot starts upvoting it can take some time.
Hmm okay you welcome dude
Yes! Yes! YES!!!! Please! My wife is sitting next to me browsing through post after post. It's fun finding that rare find, but the amount of junk we sift through is really discouraging. If someone finds a post so inspiring and well written to buy a build-a-whale for them, that is an indication that it's worth the time to highlight. It would also allow curators to keep up with the posts if there are fewer to go through.
In conclusion? YES!
@ironshield
Hi @buildawhale !
I really appreciate your service and I'm aware of your refund policy. However I'm still asking you to kindly refund my 5 sbd that I send with the wrong url.
I did also send you an additional 4 sbd with the correct url.. maybe instead of refunding you can upvote as if i send you 9 sbd?
we have different opinions. First and for most, we should consider the power of the creator team @ned , for 2 years running this site, I think he did well for the policies and the good for the community. I know I am somehow posted just a picture for a challenge but I think it is clear and accepted by the rules of steemit. Minnows and newbie in writing will one to be affected in this case(including me). So I think, we should follow what the rules are. What is the use of making a long blog if it was plagiarized?
a very useful post
