crib mattresses make good dog beds.

in #btc4 years ago

Dog beds are hard to clean, and most are not liquid proof, to clean them requires taking off the cover, tossing it in the wash and then struggling to get the cover back on.

Crib mattresses come in different sizes, are liquid proof and the covers, AKA sheets, go off and on very easily. They come in full size for larger dogs and portable crib size for smaller dogs, although this size is really big enough for a large dog as well. All different prices and quality.

Easy to clean and wash, crib mattresses do make good dog beds.

I've tried to post this so many times but it keeps getting kicked back by a bot, hope this time works. Flair, check, "why YSK" check, YSK in title, check. Lets try this again.....

I swear to god, I was just shopping for a dog bed and they’re incredibly expensive, and thought, “why not a crib mattress?” Exactly the right size. Shopped one on Facebook marketplace, came back to Reddit, and this is the first post I saw. It’s like the internet is spying on me. I'm actually supposed to have it tested every 3-6 months as one of the medications I'm on is processed through the liver and the status can change in a short amount of time. (They also test the levels of the medication in my liver, as the levels can also become toxic in a short amount of time, even if my dose hasn't changed.) You joke but my husband has wanted to get a big cushy dog bed for our kids to have for naps in the living room/book nook since day one. And our good friends have one in their toddlers book nook. He was so validated when he saw it.

I got my 90 lb mastiff/lab mix a toddler bed after hearing about it on reddit. I looove it. So easy to wash the sheets and have a waterproof cover under it.

Regular dog beds either don't have removable covers or the zipper breaks after a couple washes.

I also got one for a large dog at HomeGoods. Just expect to do a bit of digging through the piles. The one I found was Certa (or however you spell the mattress brand). Neither that dog nor the two less behaved dogs regularly in the house have torn it yet, but I haven’t witnessed any especially agressive attempts I'm using my kids' old crib mattress for my bully. Change the sheets every few days. She loves it and it is super convenient. You can get used ones at a great bargain. We got a crib mattress and a diaper changing station for our dog as beds. They are a third of the price, water proof, washable in the laundry machine and the right size for our 30kg shepherd! A single bed foam topper paired with a mattress protector and a fitted sheet works well too. That’s what we use for our 70 Lb. golden doodle. We took it from a spare bed we were no longer using. Saved a ton of money repurposing what we already had in our house.

We've always done that for our Golden Retriever, and he seems happy enough, but his hips are getting quite bad in his old age, so I wonder if we should get him an orthopedic dog beg with memory foam or something, would that be better? They are pricey but not terribly expensive ($150 maybe), but I wonder if it would help out his hips a lot compared to a crib mattress.

OP, bots always remove my posts on reddit, so I know how you feel! I am the king of getting caught in auto moderator removal filters for stated rules I clearly did not break. So frustrating in many subreddits :P

Yes! I got a mini crib mattress with inner spring, and it's the only dog bed my girl doesn't whine about using. She's 7 yrs old and I've had so many different kinds of dog beds, and she hated them all. I even tried stacking dog beds to make her more comfortable.

The spring coil mattress is the only thing I found that you can't feel the floor through. It's waterproof, but white color with a kid print. So I took a the cover off one of the dog beds with a size that fit and put it on the mattress. I'm sure you can easily make a cover too, if you don't have one on hand. You don't necessarily need to put in a zipper if that's too crafty for you, just make a large pillow case type thing.

Edit to say that you should check the sizes. I started off looking at regular crib mattresses, but they were too long for my needs. My dog is 60 lbs (amstaff) and the mini crib was a good size for her. I paid like $35 on sale for it.

I have used a crib masters for my dog the last 4 years. Awesome. He has seizures sometimes at night, loses control on his bodily functions. Everything is washable. He loves it. We love it. We did give his older bones a memory foam topper.

I don't have a big dog.

But I saw a commercial for a dog matress that showed that most mattresses are not supporting a dog's weight properly, which leads to bone damage or something. Of course that commercial was selling how their matress solves that problem.

Uncertain if it's a real problem or not. But they'd probably say a crib bed will not work.

Again, not a dog doctor or anything.

a lot of people set up a crib and the baby never or rarely even uses it. if you can't find a free or cheap one, foam crib mattresses are cheap too. i got one for under $40.

I spent $300 on a dog bed last year and while my dog loves it, and its held up well, a crib mattress would have done just fine. I did buy a crib mattress protector instead of buying the company's overpriced waterproof liner, but in the future I'll definitely go this route.

Our dog’s bed is all fabric. Machine washable. Easy.

Why get a dog bed with a cover?

We did this! It is the best dog bed ever and easy to clean indeed! Our doggo uses her mattress bed aaaaall the time. She has 2 beds in our bedroom. A true basket and her mattress. She starts on the mattress and this is her preferred bed in the day, but somehow we always find her in the basket in the mornings. We also provided her with an old pillow on her mattress and she loves this too. Spoiled...

Agreed!! My in-laws have our old crib mattress for when we all stay over, our now 4-year old would have a place to sleep. However, he’d inevitably end up in our bed or the grandparents’ bed and one of our dogs would appropriate the mattress for the rest of the night.

Omg whaaat? Where are you buying crib mattresses? They're all like $60+! I just bought the Coolaroo off of Amazon for $18, it has really good reviews so let's hope I made a good choice lol
