For today's weed news we go to the great nation of Brazil.

As countries all around the world evolve their position as well as laws pertaining to both medical and recreational cannabis, Brazil is hoping to follow suit.

The Brazilian socialist Workers Party just introduced legislation to their House of Representatives that would legalize both medical and recreational cannabis in the country.

Even though the majority of Brazilian voters seem to support legalization, there is a huge amount of opposition among the religious right-wingers in the country.

"It's probably not going to go anywhere, but it's definitely an issue that is becoming more popular among the left... The problem is the Evangelical right is totally against [legalization] on moral grounds" said Glenn Greenwald, a Brazil-based journalist in an interview with Medical Moment.

Just a year ago, the Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Roberto Barroso urged politicians in his country to consider legalizing cannabis in order to reduce Brasil's gang violence problem.

We cannot be certain that a progressive and cautious policy of decriminalization and legalization will be successful... What we can affirm is that the existing policy of criminalization has failed. We must take chances; otherwise, we risk simply accepting a terrible situation" wrote Barroso in an editorial published by The Guardian.

I feel like Barroso is definitely on the right track. The current cannabis and drug laws are not working.

A great example of a successful change in cannabis policy can be found in Brazilian neighbor Uruguay. Uruguay became the first country in the world to legalize the use of recreational cannabis a few years back, and since then it has seen a incredible drop in crime rates throughout the country.

Let's hope it doesn't take too long before some of the evangelicals in Brazil realize that cannabis is a plant created by the creator, and should be honored as such and definitely not be illegal.

Either way, it's still good to see the conversation about changing cannabis laws begin in yet another corner of the planet.

Shoutouts to Justice Barroso.

And that's what's up in Brazil!
