Watch: McGregor vs Mayweather - who needs who?

in #boxing8 years ago (edited)

Following his well publicised spat with the UFC, Conor McGregor has come out fighting. First explaining the issues he had with UFC hierarchy and then turning his attention to the rumours of a boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather.

There is no doubt that Conor McGregor is the hottest property in combat sport. The hype around round the Irish man is such that even the self-proclaimed GOAT of boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr has jumped on the bandwagon.

Floyd has made no secret of the fact that HE started the rumours of a possible fight with McGregor.

McGregor hits back and claims he has too much size, reach, height and youth for Floyd. Conor claims it would be a 'load off his shoulders' to put down all the other 'spinning' martial arts 'plates' and focus on boxing for a fight with Mayweather. However he expects $100m parity.

Does he deserve it?

Has he got what it takes to outbox the undefeated king of boxing?

My view is depending on when they fight and at what weight, it might not be as one sided as many think...

I have to agree with Max Kellerman; Floyd would destroy Conor in a boxing match, McGregor would destroy Mayweather in an MMA match.

If they used boxing rules, then I don't know if McGregor's skill set would be as good of a match. If they used UFC rules, Mayweather might finally have a hard time dancing out of trouble. They'd never get him to do UFC style, though. Fortunately, Jose Canseco just called and he's available for a lot less.

I think two thing are being overlooked in the McGregor vs Mayweather boxing debate:

  1. When they fight
  2. What weight they fight at

Re: When

  • If the boxed tomorrow Mayweather would win. If boxed in say 10 years time (with Floyd being 49, long since retired and Conor being still active but faded at 37), I'd back McGregor to win. It would be interesting if they fought in 18 months. Particularly if McGregor was able to get some high quality boxers to spar with and perhaps taking on or two warm-up (boxing ) matches to gauge his level. Conor has the aptitude and will to be a top level boxer. The only question is how quickly can he bridge the gap and by how much.? I dunno, if Floyd spent that same 18 month, eating burgers and enjoying the party life. It could be interesting

Re: Weight

  • Despite competiting at similar weights McGregor is naturally the bigger man. If they fought at 147, it's difficult to pick McGregor at any time. Although he holds the 145lb strap in the UFC, he kills himself to make that weight, making that weight then being asked to box one of the best boxers ever? No change. If they fought at say 170. That weight advantage for McGregor would spice it up. McGregor is know to have 'the kiss of death' in his left hand. If he connects with on ageing Mayweather, he knows? It will be worse than Zab Judah hitting him.

All that said I'd expect Mayweather to have too much knowhow and dominate McGregor in a boxing match.

In an MMA fight? Mayweather would stand no chance. Not ever.
